8-port 10G smart switch for ReadyNAS SMB network

Looking for help choosing a 10G switch:

I have a new-to-me RN526x, which has 2x10G copper ethernet ports. Currently, it is connected to a Netgear GS108E switch (1 Gigabit x 8 ports). I would like to update the network with a 10G switch and 10G ethernet cards in two main computers. The situation is domestic offices, Windows 10, Cat 6 cabling, RNAS OS6.10.4. Noise level under 25dB is needed.

 

I also have an older RNAS (ProPioneer, updated to OS6.10) that will be used as a backup for the RN526. It is limited to 2 x 1G ethernet ports. It can be connected to the updated 10G switch in a LAG arrangement.

 

An 8-port 10G switch would serve the RNAS 526 (1 or 2 ports), main computers (2 ports total), the older RNAS (2 ports for the LAG), an uplink port to an additional 1G switch and leave one open port. 

 

Budget under US$1,000.

 

Netgear XS708E or XS708T seem to fit. The XS708E is criticized for loud fan noise on Amazon. I am told these are older products.

 

If forum members could point out other / newer products I should consider, that would be great.Also, comments on XS708E vs XS708T appreciated. They are the same price locally.

Up front, 10 GbE is still a power hungry and hot technology.

 

The XS708E exsits in two versions.

 

The original XS708E was by far the first 10G switch for the SMB market with a very attractive price tag. Maximum power requirement was up to 220 W - and this heat has to go somewhere. It's EoL for a while already, the power requirement (and the heat dissipation was some 20.25% higher than the v2 model 

 

The newer XS708Ev2 is rated lower: 

 

Max power (worst case, all ports used, line-rate traffic) (Watts) 43.4W 
Min power (link-down standby) (Watts) 13.7W
Heat Dissipation (max and min) (BTU/hr) Max: 148.39 BTU Min:: 46.85 BTU

 

The declared Acoustic noise level @ 25°C (dBA) (ANSI-S10.12) 36.7 dBA ...

 

All XSxxxE/EM models are offering basic configuration features, and very few monitoring capabilities. 

 

The Amazon reviews are often held for years, and have typically no reference to the exact hardware version. On product lines where Netgear has released five or six vary different hardware versions, the obsolete reviews from years ago still beep up on top. rather confusing at least...

 

The XS708T came up around the same time as the 708Ev2, but offers some real managed switch core capabilities

The PoE variant would allow to drive state of the art wireless access points (WiFi 6 2x2 and 4x4, like the standalone WAC214 and WAC218, or the cloud managed and 802.11k/v/r "Mesh" capable WAC5xx and WAX6xx), or to connect decent notebook(s) with 2.5G port.

Noise is always relative - even is on a low level, it can be intrusive.

In the event, an XS728T showed up on eBay at an acceptable price. I went for it. Delivery in 10 days or so. Noise may be an issue -- I can place it in the basement away from offices/living area.
