4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

Hey people,

I've been a long time stalker of this forum and have found it to be a wealth of knowledge ... thanks heaps to all of you who've helped me along the way.

Recently I picked up a MacBook Air (yes, I've crossed to the dark side) only to find that it didn't play overly well with 4.1.7 Raidiator on my NV+. Not to worry, the 4.1.8 T9 beta includes various OSX Lion goodness which should knock any issues I have on the head. It helped, that's for sure. The AFP share mapping works a treat ... I converted by PC based iTunes and LightRoom libraries over in a jiffy. The same couldn't be said for setting up Time Machine though. I've followed the Time Machine guide, cycled Bonjour and AFP, restarted the NAS, the works without any joy.

Essentially, I've followed the guide and when I go to select the disk I'm prompted for the ReadyNAS user and the password I've set. At this point in time, the authentication dialog disappears and I'm left with a spinning beach ball of death with Time Machine never responding.

Are there any Time Machine specific logs I can dig up to determine if there are any issues being thrown behind the scenes?

Thanks in advance for any assistance here peeps.

On your Mac you could go to Applications > Utilities > Console. In the log list on the left hand side, select system.log. Then in the string matching field type "backupd" (no quotes).

DId you make a failed attempt at a Time Machine backup when you were running 4.1.7?

Welcome to the forum!

I did have a crack at using Time Machine on 4.1.7, alas to no avail.

I'll jump on the laptop at home tonight and will post up the logs ...

It's good to be here!

Interesting, now it just keeps asking me over and over which disk I want to choose. Each time I select ReadyNAS the dialog goes away, only to return and ask me again.

Filtering the systemout.log for backupd yields no results. Is there a specific log I can tail on the ReadyNAS to see what (if anything) is happening server side?

Take a look at /var/log/netatalk.log

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

Ok, so I've restarted Time Machine on the ReadyNAS which has returned it back to its previous behaviour where I get the spinning beach ball of death instead of the dialog popping up over and over to ask me to select a drive.

Whilst there's nothing for backupd in the systemout.log on OSX, there is the following from the netatalk.log on the ReadyNAS:

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

You should see some lines in your system.log on your mac for backupd.

Doesn't look like the mac is even trying to make a connection to the ReadyNAS.

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

Is backupd only initialized once the switch on Time Machine is flicked to the "on" position?

Also, I did notice that when I select the disk, I dont get the address(?) specified to the right of the NAS name as per the screenshots included here: http://www.readynas.com/?p=1097 ... Perhaps this is a change in Lion tho.

I'll have a crack at flicking the switch to "on" tonight to see if it has any impact.

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

Whenever Time Machine is run you should get log entries.

You could try deleting all the keychain entries for your NAS on your Mac, rebooting your Mac then attempting to connect again.

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

When you say "Whenever time machine is run" does this include just firing up the settings interface to configure exclude lists, disks, etc or only when a backup is actuall attempted?

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

I think only when a backup is attempted.

No problems. You've given me a few things to follow up on - I'll have a solid play with it tonight and will let you know how I get on.

Re: 4.1.8-T9 Cant initialise Time Machine on OSX Lion

Got it working chaps. As simple as it sounds, I had to switch Time Machine to "on" before selecting the disk, rather than the other way around.

Might be worthwhile updating the Time Machine guide to reflect this too?

Thanks for your help mdgm 🙂
