Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

OS6.4.0-T112 on upgraded Pro 6 issue (I think it is an issue but I am not certain):

System Temp = 64C (147F) but System Fan loafing at 888 RPM.

It is Re-syncing after Factory Reset and RAID 6 setup.   CPU T=50C (124F); Core T 48C - CPU fan speed 1622 rpm.  I had been running OS6.3.5 and had a similar System Temp issue, but it was not as hot as this time!

Re: Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

The system temp sensor on Pro 6 is at the mainboard hot spot.  So a reading of 64C (and even higher) is totally reasonable and safe.  The fan gets adjusted mainly based on the hard disk temperatures, since their temperature tolerance is much tighter than the ICs on the mainboard.  However, if the system temp reading is really high (like closing in on 80C), then the fans will get adjusted higher.

6.4.0 is not designed for pro 6

Agreed. However, I am interested in whether a user has a similar experience and has a workaround.

Your support profile indicates that you have a Pro Business Edition not a Pro 6.

I assume you have the stock hardware (CPU and RAM) installed?

Re: Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

Sorry I was lazy with the post. Here is the system: Pro Pioneer Edition which I upgraded to Xeon X3230 2.66 GHz CPU and 8 GB memory. Until the OS 6.4.0 update, it was XRAID with 6 disks.  Recently updated to OS6.4.0, replaced 3 older (hot) disks with 2 larger newer models, so now 4 disks in RAID6. Other hardware unchanged.

Of course, I accept that the system will not run the same temps as an unmodified machine. What I find unusual is that the system fan runs at less than 1000 rpm no matter what the system temp is.

Re: Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

Update - I unplugged and re-plugged the connector for the case fan.  Now the fan is running at 2008 rpm and the system temp is 55C - much better than 65C or more.  Conclusion for now: a mildly corroded connection for the fan.

Thanks, very helpful.  Re-sync has finished. Temps Disk/CPU/Sys (C) 28/46/49.  Fan speeds CPU/SYS 750/2057 rpm - well within your specification.  Noise is not an issue for me (RNAS is in an otherwise unoccupied area), so the higher case fan rpm compared to before is OK with me.

Re: Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

Just wanted to comment on this as I just upgraded my pro 6 from 6.2.5 (had issues with 6.3 running on the pro 6 it would hang after a few days).  I also am seeing much higher system temps on 6.4.0-T147.   I upgraded last night and right away the system temps were showing around 64c.  I read this post and not to be concerened with it, but over night I received around 30 warnings stating " System temperature in enclosure Internal exceeded safety threshold. (66 C)."   The drive temps are all around 41c, cpu fan showing 1622rpm, system 860rpm, cpu 40c, system 65c.

Is the only current workaround just to ignore the temps or disable the warning emails?

Thanks,

Jeff

You can just modify /etc/frontview/sensors/NV6.conf, and change "temp1_max" to 80.

Thanks Skywalker I will give that a shot.

Re: Readynasos 6.4.0-T112 temperature fan speed

Even so, there could be improvements in the ramp rate of the system fan, given that it can spin up to 2200 rpm, and the system logs errors when it is running below 900 rpm.  Having the fan running at a nominal 1000-ish rpm and a slightly more linear ramp rate would be beneficial to both error logging and system airflow with minimal noise gains.

I would also point out that anyone with user-replaced system fans (such as the Noctua), would probably like to set a more aggressive ramp rate due to the maximum 1300 rpm that the majority of such fans run at.

Skywalker, can the fan minimal speed be edited in the NV6.conf file as well?

Longer term, a  OS fan menu setting of cooler / quieter / balanced would be a huge improvement.

It won't take effect there, but you can just write whatever minimum RPM you would like to
/etc/frontview/min_fan_speed_override.

Yes, we plan on making this tunable eventually, but possibly using an app if not from the native UI.

Hi,

I have an Ultra6 in the same situation, I get the internal enclosure warning with a 34C° detected .... what file I should fix ? I tried with ULTRA6.conf without luck .... here how it looks like now

chip "coretemp-isa-0000"
        label temp2 "CPU"
        ignore temp3

chip "it8721-isa-*"
        ignore in0
        label in0 "V+12"
        compute in0 @*4, @/4
        set in0_min 10.8

        set in6_min -13.2
        set in6_max -10.8
        set in7_min 3.135
        set in7_max 3.465
