I recently got a older ready Nas and I went to unofficially upgrade to 6.0 from 4.2.30 I know probably should of done a bit more research on that one but after waiting a hour and a half for the Nas to reboot i turned it of since there was no signs of progress now it gets stuck on booting and I cant find a way to boot to recovery usb I can get to the boot menu with normal factory settings os reinstall and tech support they don't show anything promising trough a serial output if you have any tips to get a bit further or if you think its fully bricked let me know bye for now

Re: Cannot get to usb recovery on nvx4210

The NVX cannot be converted to OS6, so what you attempted may have bricked your NAS.  But others have found that a USB recovery will often fix it.  USB recovery is not done via the boot menu, it's done as described here: https://kb.netgear.com/30267/RAIDiator-4-2-USB-Recovery-Tool .

Note that the NAS can be picky about the USB drive you use.  USB3 won't work.  Basically, older is generally better.  It's useful to use one with a indicator LED so you can see if it's doing more than just a quick look at the drive.  If you don't succeed with one, try a different brand.

So basically I got a usb 2.0 32gb drive it gets to the megatrend bios for a bit then goes blank when I used the 3.0 one it said vtloading and stopped on the serial I have a 16gb 2.0 coming tomorrow but I doubt it will work is there any reason why the serial goes blank if you think there's no coming back just let me know lol

Re: Cannot get to usb recovery on nvx4210

I have found the ultra-cheap 8GB ones on eBay or Amazon usually work well.

Where are you seeing the serial number, on the console display?  Is it the right one, or based on the MAC address?  Note that the console display in OS4 does blank out during boot and never comes back, so that's not necessarily where it's stopping.  Does the USB drive have an LED so you can see if it's still being accessed?

I don't know what the symptoms are when the attempt to update to OS6 on an NVX does brick the NAS and I've not seen anyone who did successfully recover from it via USB recovery post any details, just that it worked.  I have seen posts where recovery didn't work, but also have no details.

BTW, where did you get the instructions for the OS6 conversion?  Every place I see them, I try to post a warning that it only works for 64-bit Intel based units (your NVX is 32-bit).  But with lots of people trying to take credit for what was posted here years ago, I can't always find them all.
