NAS shows Online(VPN Disconnected) ReadyCloud is working and I can access the NAS from PC Windows

NAS shows Online(VPN Disconnected). ReadyCloud is working and I can access the NAS via ReadyCloud from PC Windows remotely

I have logged off / on, reinstalled the ReadyCloud software on my remote computer , Updated NAS software to latest, and rebooted NAS twice.

ReadyCloud was working but not sure when problem developed. (This has happened in the past and has self resolved.)

I have changed no settings anywhere.

If you are offering advice or a solution please state where the action needs to be taken. On local PC to the NAS or remote PC etc and please don't assume I know anything!

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Setup NAS 104, Windows 10 local PC and remote Windows 10PC

{I am not sure why location is showing as Smart WIFI, General... but there appears to be on relevant location option}

Is the only thing wrong the "VPN Disconnected" status? If that's the case, I'd just ignore it.

Are you aware that Netgear will be shutting down ReadyCloud in a few months?

Sorry Didn't make myself clear I can not access my NAS on my remote computer other than login in Via the ReadyCloud therefore synchronisation is not accessible and not happening. So my remote PC is not able to back up or store data on my NAS drive.

Also: ReadyCloud is shutting down?

Why?

What is replacing it to carry out its function?

I use my NAS drive as a private Cloud storage and backup.

Look at the orange stripe at the top of the forum page!

Netgear isn't saying why they are shutting it down.  Though of course it does cost them money to run, and brings in no direct revenue.

They aren't replacing it with anything. If you have a Nighthawk or Orbi router, you can set up remote access with OpenVPN (many competing routers also offer this).  ZeroTier can also be installed on the NAS.  Free clients for both are available for iOS, Android, Windows, and OSX.

If you mostly need remote access, then OpenVPN, Zerotier, or a similar VPN will do the trick.

But if you share your NAS files with others, then remote access might not be enough.  In that situation, you could look at something like NextCloud or OwnCloud.  My advice here is to install that on a PC with the NAS volume mapped to a drive letter.  The NAS linux version is old, and it will be increasingly difficult to install apps (and updates to apps) on the NAS itself.

Ok. I haven't used ReadyCloud for a long time, and I don't know if this is widespread, or just an issue with your particular system.  Hopefully someone else here who does use it will chime in.

Still, I think you are better off transitioning to something else now - no need to wait until the service is shut down.
