Performance ReadyCloud app.

Performance ReadyCloud app.

Hi!

Downloading a file (25mb) from my ReadyNAS 202 at home to my pc at work using admin page takes about 30 sek.

The same file downloaded from ReadyCloud portal take about 3 sek.

Admin page is using the built in vpn (ReadyCloud App) I guess.

Is there any tweaks I can do to speed things up?

Kind Regards

Bernt

Re: Performance ReadyCloud app.

I manage to get the file transfer from crawling to walking by changing the nic binding order (Netgear VPN Virtual nic) in Windows. I could live with it for now but it's still 5 times slower than downloading from ReadyCloud Portal.

If you didn't forward https ports in your router to the NAS and set up ddns, then it would be using readycloud.

No, there are no tweaks on ReadyCloud.  You can set things up so you can directly access the NAS using ftps or https over the internet w/o ReadyCloud.  Though your corporate firewall might block that access when you are at work.

Try using the admin page at home and compare the times there (e.g. using both windows explorer and https to copy the data).  That will give you some idea on whether the issue is related to the VPN, or if https acess is just slower.

Re: Performance ReadyCloud app.

Thanks for the reply.

To use the Admin page over internet I need the ReadyCloud App, right? Slow download from Admin page

To use the ReadyCloud portal over internet I don't need the ReadyCloud App? Ten times faster download from the Portal.

No portforwarding or ddns. Well, I forwarded port 3600 just to test if the perfomance was better but it did not get much better.

Copying files to/from the NAS using Windows shares or http on lan is very fast.

It sounds like you are using the ReadyCloud VPN.  But you don't need to use it - there are two other basic ways which don't require transfering your data through cloud servers.  Both would require a ddns name to simplify remote access through your home router.

One is to use a different VPN.  Many routers now support OpenVPN, which would give you direct access to your full home network.  It doesn't require cloud services to connect.

The second is to configure a secondary https port in your NAS (somewhere between 49152-65535) and forward that port in your router to the NAS.  For instance, 54321.  Then use https://ddnsname:54321/admin to access the NAS.

There is one other alternative, which is to use owncloud, dropbox, or btsync - with the appropriate third party apps installed on the NAS.

Forwarding ports never improves performance.  Often you need to forward ports in order to get a service to connect.  But if it is connecting already, forwarding the port has no value (and probably shouldn't be done).

Yes, but http might still be significantly slower then windows shares.  Perhaps test with a much larger file, so you can see.

Re: Performance ReadyCloud app.

I know there alternetivs but it would be realy nice if I could get at least half the speed over the ReadyCloud App vpn compared to using just the ReadyCloud Portal.

I'm using Logitech Media Server and stream music from it to Squeezelite on my pc at work so I guess I need to use the ReadyCloud App. I also use apps that copy or moves files using Windows shares. Don't want to open up ports if I don't have to.

I just moved all my media files from Vortexbox to ReadyNAS on my lan and there was a few big movies there. No problem with speed at all.

On Vortebox I used Neouroter vpn and it was kind of slow to. Was hoping that ReadyCloud vpn would be faster.
