RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Hi, just spent 48 hours sorting this. SInce I upgraded firmware to 6.5.0 and merged my MyNetgear and Readycloud accounts, I haven't been able to access my shares via Windows explorer. The NAS still showed up, but gave a "Not Found" error when double clicked. It  wouldn't open with RAIDAR either, but worked fine in a browser or via the Readycloud App. I tried mucking about with NETBIOS and all sorts of registry hacks to no avail, but then by chance noticed that it worked fine on the same PC when my wife was logged on.

For some reason, it appears that if you use the same email address for Readycloud as you do for your Microsoft Account login to Windows 10, the NAS won't let you browse the shares via SMB.

Anyway, as soon as I changed my email details in my Readycloud (and MyNetgear) accounts to an alternative mail account, everything started working again.

Is this something obvious I should have known about? Hopefully this will help other users.

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Hi DaveTC1970,

Thanks for providing feedback. We have seen a lot of users who had the same problem and changing or removing the e-mail address of the local user (same e-mail used on the created NETGEAR account) has been the solution or the workaround for this issue.

@pixelriffic, it's the e-mail address that he used on his local and ReadyCLOUD user accounts. Can you tell us if SMB protocol is still enabled under services?

Kind regards,

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Is your email address longer than 32 characters? In other threads, this was mentioned as an issue on 6.5.0 so far.

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

HI,

My email address was 25 characters long.

It seems that there is something funny going on when the NAS knows that a certain email address is associated with a ReadyCloud account, and that same email address has been used as the Microsoft logon for the PC being used to access the shares. It's very peculiar, when the ReadyCloud app opened the share, it showed up in file manager with the same IP address as usual (the same as the SMB name resolution should generate) and worked OK. I knew it had to be something about the NAS, because I simultaneously lost access on my WIndows tablet with the same login details,

Thanks

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Same problems here since the upgrade.. One thing however.. my email address is the same but my password being used for MyNETGEAR/ReadyCLOUD is different.... PLUS my sign in to my NAS through SMB is as admin.. not using any of the other accounts I have generated within the NAS OS...

Now I can access the device using its IP with SMB \\10.0.0.4\ for example... BUT I am not having to place credentials.. or logon.. which I am not exactly kosher with so-to-speak... 😞

Several people are having the same issue with the NAS Systems varying in model number since the upgrade to 6.5.0...

Hoping for a release that fixes the issue very soon.

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

HI DaveTC1970 & MarkusX0,

Have you guys tried resetting the permission of the affected share/s? Or at least tried mapping the shares on a PC where the main or admin ReadyCLOUD is signed in using the desktop app.

Kind regards,

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Hi Brian. I looked at doing that before I came to my solution, but the problem iwas that none of the shares were accessible, and there didn't to be a a global permissions reset option. Also, I didn't have any user permissions set up under SMB, as I am the only NAS user on my home network. The only time I needed to provide login credentials was when accessing the setup page, which I had left at the default "admin" user name with a different password. Having set up my new Cloud account on 6.5.0 using my usual email details, I lost access to the NAS on all three of my Windows machines (desktop, laptop and tablet) using the same email address as the Microsoft account login. The readyvloud app was only installed on my laptop. The NAS worked perfectly when accessed from my wife's Windows account on the same machines. (Not set up as a Readycloud user.) Everything started working again on all machines when I changed my Readycloud account details to a different email.

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

I noticed a lot of people are posting about SMB access loss after 6.5.0.  I have never used remote access for my RN102, and have no interest in it.

If I understand Dave corrrectly, SMB access is somehow affected by this Readycloud remote access account?  Or am I missing something?

even \\readynas or \\ip address fails now.  Very frustrating .

Correct, the email used for Readycloud is the same as for the local user.  I am unclear on where this should be changed.

I would appreciate any suggestions.  I need files on the drive for my work.

SORRY, I replied to the wrong thread.. 😛

Re: ReadyNAS shown on network but not accessible after upgrade to OS 6.5.0

I have resolved the issue for two devices...using the suggestions here on the site... beleive it or not, one of them is a NIGHTHAWK X6 R8000 router.

Before I was still using the method in which you click on the share from the app to get access to the NAS.

The only way to resolve the issue is to make an email address which is different from your main Microsoft account ( the one which is plugged into Windows 10 in various different methods ) I used a backup email account to first register a new MyNETGEAR or ReadyCLOUD account. This account is also plugged into my Windows 10 but not in use for the main Windows Account... It is however in use for another account on my computer, but I use a Local Account type login. I signed out of the App... I unregistered the R8000 ReadyCLOUD and chose 'Leave' in the ReadyNAS Cloud settings for ReadyCLOUD and turned it off.. I rebooted the NAS.. and went through the process of signing in and turning on ReadyCLOUD... Then signed in with my R8000 under ReadyCLOUD and registered it again.. loaded ( the app )and signed in to ReadyCLOUD and turned on Discovery on the NAS ( which is easily accessible on the front of the 316 ) and all was good again.. including access to my router, its shares and the NAS... using \\READYNAS and \\10.0.0.4... it also started asking for login credentials again, allowing me to login with the admin account.

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

If all else fails you can try the http:// protocol access directly to the share ( if it is turned on and the user has permissions to access it. The NAS will act as Apache HTTP Server will .. you will get a directory listing of your files to download.. Enabling access to everyone during this process should skip any credential checks but I would change that when you are done.. Mine ( locally ) would ask for the logon - used admin..Temporary fix for the issue if this is time sensitive for work as mentioned. FTP may work a well... Just a thought

Re: RN102 - Lost SMB Share Access with 6.5.0 - Can Still See in Network and access via ReadyCloud

Markus,

Holy crap!  That's it!  I changed my email address associated with Readycloud, turned it off, rebooted the NAS, and could access windows shares by logging in as a local NAS user account.  You are correct, in that it is clearly an issue with the local Windows 10 email account, which is in fact the login as well.  Hmmm.... I bet I'm not the only one that uses the same email as a login on more than one host.  8-/

Thank you so much.  I was really sweating this, as I have more than one client breathing down my neck.

I will say that I'll think twice before upgrading this again.  Pretty big blunder on Netgear's part if you ask me.

Thanks again
