Indicate, which NAS is concerned by a logfile
Downloading the logfiles from a READYNAS to your computer results in a zip-file containing about 60+ elements giving info about various topics. For example INITRD.LOG tells you about all firmware releases your system was upgraded to so far.
Should you for whatever reason be interested in analyzing the same type of logfile across different NAS it might become a bit confusing.
Very few logfiles indicate, which NAS they are coming from, where most of them do not. All logfiles only have a name indicating the topic it reports about.
By putting up to 15 characters of the NAS’ name into the log’s filename the logs could be distinguished by topic AND source.
Naming convention for the filename could be as follows (sample): TOPIC_NAMEOFNAS.LOG
At least 2 scenarios for analytic activities on the logged data would be facilitated:
- Cross-NAS-Reporting: Automated reporting using scripts can recognize the logfiles according to NAS’ name AND topic giving insights across a couple of NAS
- Manual comparison of two or more logfiles of the same type on screen can help users to stay focused as NAS’ name and topic are displayed in the headers of the concerned windows.
