Support Docker on ReadyNAS OS 6
I think it'd be great to be able to use my NAS as a Docker host. What is Docker? You can think of it as kind of a "lightweight virtualisation" technology, running applications in "containers". Why Docker on ReadyNAS?
- It gives a solid, simple way of compartmentalising applications away from a host - e.g. the ReadyNAS itself.
- It lets you run these things fast, pretty much bare metal fast in comparison to a VM.
- It's already well used and has a large library of images, support, etc.
For Netgear, it isolates any of these "custom apps" away from core ReadyNAS functionality.
For us users, it gives us a great flexible solution for running all sorts of apps on the NAS, without getting in the way of the NAS OS.
With the latest beta (ReadyNASOS 6.5.0-T338 Beta 2) the prerequisites for running Docker are just about there. Just need to have a few config options turned on, and tested with the rest of the system.
I've written some details about how it's currently achieveable on a ReadyNAS VM at least here:
