Problems with Backup to USB HDD

OK in order to hep fix another problem with my RN104 I am trying to backup everything to a USB external HD.

RN104

Firmware 6.10.3

4x 2TB WD Red Drives (Raid 5)

external HD WD My Passport (1TB)

1. Plug external Drive into front USB port

2. Wait for it to be recognised

3. Format Drive as EXT4 (saw recommendation somewhere else on forum)

4. Create Backup Job to backup directory onto drive

5. Run Job

Backup Job Name: job_001
Backup Job Type: Incremental
Protocol: local
Backup Source: [Documents]/
Backup Destination: [USB_HDD_3]/Test
Backup Start Time: Wed May 27 2020  7:40:58 AM
Backup Finish Time: Wed May 27 2020  7:52:56 AM
Backup Status: Fail: Destination is read-only or files/folders could not be created. Check if these files or folders meet the destination file system limitation.

Cannot create file '/media/USB_HDD_3/Test/Books/Battletech/BattleTech 10977 Field Manual - Mercenaries (Rev).pdf' (error: Read-only file system)!

Other things I have tried...remove external hard drive and format NTFS....same result, failure

Here was me thinking this would be easy.

This usually happen when the drive was not properly unmounted or ejected.

You may want to check this link and perform the steps recommended and see if it will help.

A backup you can't access on another computer isn't worth very much.

EXT4 formatting is fine if you have other linux systems.  But if you have don't, then NTFS is a better choice.

I have followed the instruction in the post and still no luck.

1. Plug HD inot PC and reformat as NTFS

2. Made sure to eject drive

3. Put drive inot front port on RN104

4. Create new backup job pointiung backup at front USB port

5. Job Runs then Fails

when I look at the drive on my PC it needs a scan and a fix but there are some files that have been written as per the log.

Maybe its time to get a new NAS

Did you eject the drive before you removed it from the NAS?  Windows and Mac PCs don't require that step any more, but the NAS does.

When the PC gives that prompt, then the NAS will mount the drive read-only.  So run that scan.

I'm thinking it's more likely that you need a new USB hard drive.  

You can test it with vendor tools in the PC (seatools for seagate or lifeguard for western digitial).

You can also try backing up the full share from the PC, using drag-and-drop, or possible a tool like teracopy or free file sync.

Made sure that USB drive is/was ejected properly from each machine it was connected to.

The USB drive in question is about 4 weeks old, however to illiminate that I have opened a brand new 4TB external USB HD and am tying that right now.

This is related to the other issue I have open at the moment about the performance of the NAS, it will take a long time to backup all the files doing it accross the NW.

Update: I tried a backup of another part of the file system and it seemed to go without any errors.

Went back and looked at the error and it looks like it might be one of the files causing a problem.

Doing some final checks but it seem to be working now.
