NAS 104 slow or hangs

I have just started to us my RN104 as my music library store...

Up to date everything worked well .. and all  latest updates installed

The system is accessable by several W10 PC ... both ethernet and WIFI

It seems to take a long time .. 10 seconds or so to load a file if I havent used the player recently

and often hangs at 99.89% or even 100% when I edit or update music track information.

Any suggestions to improve this situation ?

I am using AIMP software .. but seems the same using other software.

Many thanks in advance

Re: NAS 104 slow or hangs

Do you have drive spin-down enabled?  That can slow initial response.

Re: NAS 104 slow or hangs

If you have strict sync enabled for the NAS share, try turning it off.

Are you seeing a more normal speed when you browse to the NAS share using file explorer?

Re: NAS 104 slow or hangs

Thank you Boh for the support and suggestions... strict sync was on .. turned off but dont see and improvement.

Things seems ok accessing via a browser.

These suggestions have taken me into new areas in the config.. so thought should post a pic of the setup incase that shows a cue.

Re: NAS 104 slow or hangs

What firmware are you running?

Turning off strict sync will speed up writes, but not reads.

Perhaps try running NasTester on one of the PCs, and let us know what read/write performance you are seeing. http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance

Broadly speaking, directory browsing using SMB is much slower than reading/writing large files.  So if the application on the PC is wading through a lot of files (or subfolders), it will be be slow.  Similarly, accessing a database on the NAS over the network can be slow.  Options to improve performance include

  • using ReadyDLNA on the NAS itself (which will give you less features)
  • using Plex on the NAS (not sure how the features would compare)
  • using PC software that has a database on the PC, so the software doesn't search as much
  • upgrading to a more powerful NAS
  • using SSDs instead of mechanical disks

More new areas ... I did the  test .. and attached the results.. are they good or bad ?

Is READYDLNA the DLNA button in the settings?

Yes.

They are not particularly good.  Is the PC using WiFi or ethernet?

FWIW, this is what I see on an RN102 running RAID-1 with Seagate 1 TB Ironwolf drives:

Running a 400MB file write on \\10.0.0.13\Music 5 times...
Iteration 1: 71.52 MB/sec
Iteration 2: 72.59 MB/sec
Iteration 3: 72.84 MB/sec
Iteration 4: 75.11 MB/sec
Iteration 5: 73.33 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (W): 73.08 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Running a 400MB file read on \\10.0.0.13\Music 5 times...
Iteration 1: 46.50 MB/sec
Iteration 2: 58.20 MB/sec
Iteration 3: 58.24 MB/sec
Iteration 4: 58.41 MB/sec
Iteration 5: 53.61 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (R): 54.99 MB/sec
-----------------------------

I only use this NAS occasionally for tests - not sure the read speeds are as slow as they are.
