ReadyNAS Remote as WEBDAV and/or via DDNS

Hi

I an new to ReadyNAS and new to the Forum

I am the proud owner of a ReadyNAS+ V2 with 4 bays and was wondering if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction.

It’s not that things don’t work as such, they don’t work the way I need and want them to with regard to remote access.

So, on my ReadyNAS I do have the readynas remote enabled, and webdav enabled on my shares (and in fact ftp as well).

I also have a DDNS capability via a third party and believe I am forwarding the right ports through my router (443 to the ReadyNAS)

Some of the documents I have on the ReadyNAS, all Microsoft Office based, are password protected.

I have applications on my PC, Android Tablet, iPad and iPhone which are able to open the documents when accessing the shares on the ReadyNAS at home on the LAN. I can do this either by using a file browser on those devices that offer the ability to use the “open in” capability or indeed from within some applications I can access the share and the passworded documents directly. In fact, whatever I try to do at home on the LAN generally works.

It is remote access that is causing me problems.

I CANNOT use ReadyNAS remote for the tablets or iPhone because whilst I connect perfectly to the ReadyNAS when I’m out and about, I can’t do anything with the passworded documents because ReadyNAS remote doesn’t know what to do with them – trying to preview and/or download them just gives a file error. And I CANNOT use readynas remote client for my PC, partly because I do not always have the PC with me, but mostly because the Leaf adapter VPN just causes my laptop to go so slowly, and also get very confused as to what networks it is connected to.

And even though I have apps on my tablets and iPhone that CAN open them, the local ReadyNAS Remote folders on the devices won’t let those application access the downloaded files.

So then I thought I would use try accessing the ReadyNAS as a webdav drive using the public IP address provided to my home router by my DDNS provider, or indeed the URL.

No matter what I put in when trying to create the webdav link on my PC, webdav tablet apps or webdav phone apps it just doesn’t connect. Again, they work at home on the LAN and my logic was to simply change out the local IP address of the LAN and replace it with the DDNS name or public IP address and then the router at home should forward port 443 to the ReadyNAS share.

So…

Has anyone managed to do anything like this? If so, please can you let me know how to do it. Any other ideas?

Many thanks in advance

Re: ReadyNAS Remote as WEBDAV and/or via DDNS

I don't regularly use https to access shares, but I do use it to manage the NAS remotely (in my case 2 v1 ReadyNAS and one Pro). On the older ReadyNAS interface, you can specify an alternative HTTPS port (both 443 and the alternative work). That allows you to forward a non-standard port - which you then append to your DDNS name (:xxxx)

As a test you could also forward port 80.

I am not seeing the port configuration stuff in the v2 software manual, maybe another v2 user will chime in.
