"Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

Please help me! I have paid a lot of money for two units with disks and licenses to run ReadyNas Replicate and I can't get it to work properly!
I get the same error message every time I try to use the ReadyNAS Replicate. I have tried running both Backup Data and Backup System and all the time I get "Snapshot initialization failed" error. Both devices are ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with RAIDiator 5.3.5 and Flex-RAID (Raid5) disk configuration (running 4 x Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 in each unit). I am running the latest version (1.1.3) of ReadyNAS Replicate (two purchased licenses). I have disabled encryption and not using compression to speed up the process. I have tried creating new backup jobs, removing the old failed folders and restarting both units several times. I can't see any solution, it feels like I have tried all combinations and it fails every time. Below is the log from the latest attempt to run a Backup System:

System backup does work in the opposite direction?

Today I tested to create a backup job making a backup in the other direction (from my backup nas to my main nas).
It seemed to work just fine. I cancelled the backup since I don't want that backup but it gave me hope that there might be a solution to this problem.

But it didn't work...

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

I made another attempt, this time also downloading the complete system logs from both units and comparing them.
I can't see any problem in the logs that explains why I get "Snapshot initialization failed" all the time.

Thanks for that link! I have posted a question using that form and included a link to this forum post 🙂 Hopefully I will get some more feedback from there!

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

Problem solved!
It was the default setting (10 GB) for snapshot size that had to be changed to "no snapshot". I got the information from Jeff Capone (Netgear). I created a new "System backup"-job with correct settings and after performing a restart of both NAS units the backup is now running and is expected to finish within about 30 hours according to ReadyNAS Replicate. It will be interesting to see how long time the incremental backup will take, that will determine how it will be possible to schedule the System backup using ReadyNAS Replicate.

Tell me more about this snapshot issue, can someone shed the light on how to use the snapshot setting?

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

FWIW, I would get that "Snapshot initialization failed" if a substantial amount of data - several GBs or more - was being written to the NAS while it was trying to do a backup.

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

This was the email that I got from Netgear support
Hi,
The NV+ does not have snapshotting capabilities and I am not sure why the UI when you create a replicate job is offering that option; I will report this bug. In any case, when you create a job please set the snapshot to "no snapshot" and try to run the job and let me know.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

The incremental backup took about 10 hours for about 5 TB of data. I have reported the errors (bold font below) from the log to Netgear support.

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

was getting the same error in log file. i too have the snapshot option in my UI and it was auto-set to 10. switched to "no snapshot", no issues.

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

But isn't the snapshot required for backups to function properly?

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

Snapshot support seems to have been removed since NV+ v1. The information below is taken from Netgear information from NV+ v1: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=193#Overview

...
In addition to the various security options, the NV+ comes with snapshot support. Consider a snapshot as an instant point-in-time image of your data, sort of like a photo taken with a camera. Regardless of the number of files or the volume of data on the ReadyNAS, a snapshot only takes a couple of seconds, and you can continue using the ReadyNAS as usual during the snapshot process. If you inadvertantly change or delete files or folders after you’ve taken a snapshot, you can always revert to the version saved in that snapshot. This can be useful if your files were infected with a virus and you needed to revert back to a good copy saved at midnight.
A snapshot can also be scheduled to coincide with your backups. Typical backups can take hours, so a backup of a snapshot insures that you’re making a backup of something that won’t be changing during the backup process.
...

On this page about NV+ v2 Netgear says clearly that there is no snapshot backup support: http://www.netgear.com/images/ReadyNAS_ ... -57079.pdf
Instead of snapshot support there seems to be some kind of lock while making backup.

More about snapshot can be found at:

Re: "Snapshot initialization failed" error every time

The NV+ v2 and NV+ (v1) use very different hardware and a different OS. The NV+ v2 has some features that the NV+ (v1) does not and vice versa.
