readynas duo and 1100 probleme with SSL

Hi,

is not a solution, i prefer use an old version of firefox on a dedicated computer that accept flux in http only.

why create a community website if is not possible to share code for very old version that you don't want manage on security update

regards

Feel free to share away. Netgear has always made their Linux core source available, so have at it.  But best of luck putting together a development environment for the custom SPARC processor and finding what you need to add an SSL update to the very old Linux core of that machine.

A user has already made available updates for OS 4.2.x (for Intel based legacy NAS) and 5.x (for ARM legacy NAS) so maybe somebody will do the same for 4.1.x.  But the fact that nobody has done so in no way indicates that it's not allowed here.  Netgear announced quite a long time ago that they would not be providing any new updates, so it's just been a matter of time before those hanging on to theor old hardware ran into a problem like this.

To be clear - neither @Sandshark nor I work for Netgear.

I pointed out the lack of encryption in the workaround post - since it is clear that enterprise folks in particular might find that unacceptable. Though continuing to use TLS 1.0/1.1 in an enterprise is likely equally unacceptable.  Still, if you prefer using an old version of firefox, then of course you can do that.

As far as home use goes

  • home routers similarly use http for local administration.
  • we are talking about an ancient version of linux that hasn't received a backported security update from Netgear in 5 years.  So IMO you can't assume that a 4.1.x NAS is secured from current attacks anyway.  You are depending on the edge security from your router.

As @Sandshark says, it would be great if you (or someone else) can provide a TLS 1.2 add-on for 4.1.x systems that is similar to what @WhoCares_ has already provided for 4.2.x and 5.3.x systems.
