Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

All of the sudden i received subjected error on my 2 disks on Nas and after that i am not able to open the shared folder via explorer. Seems that one of my HDD is failed but i am not sure if i will replace the faulty HDD, i will get my data or now. Kindly advise if there is anyway i can open the shared folder and altleast copy my data prior replacing the HDD. I am also not sure completely which drive is failed one only or both.

Thanks,

Download the logs from the web UI and look at disk_info.log for full details about the health of your drives.

Please post an extract of mdstat.log here.

Hi Jak,

Previously when i was accessing the NAS from the explorer it was not showing any shared folder but now i can see shared folder but it is not accessable. To be honest i dont understand anything in disk_info.log file but on Web UI all 4 HDD's are showing green and healthy. Please have a look on mdstat.log file.

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

The RAID array for the data volume is stopped. Are the disks shown in red under the System / Volume tab?

In disk_info.log, you need to look at the SMART counters for each drive, to see the errors (Reallocated sectors, Current pending sectors, Offline uncorrectable errors, ATA errors, etc.) and identify each drive by its device name (i.e. sda) and its Serial number.

Hi,

Yes all 4 Disks are red and i am affraid if i  loose all my data. I have pasted disk_info for your advise which drive is faulty and if i replace faulty drive then i will get back my data. i am only worried about my data as i dont have any backup.

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

Both sdc and sdd are pretty bad.

sdc S/N S1D8NLYY: 1267 ATA errors.

sdd S/N S1D8P48E: 3389 ATA errors, 1289 Reallocated sectors, 1407 Pending sectors and uncorrectable errors.

This is a critical situation. I doubt both disks suddenly got into that condition. Usually, with this type of counter, they've been getting worse over time.

If you look in the smart_history.log file, you should get more info.

You can also note that both drives are out the OS RAID array, md0.

You'll probably have to clone both of them onto new drives. This is the safest way. If you reboot without one of them and get your data volume back by luck, you may end up worsening the condition of the dodgy drive into a completely dead one.

If you don't know how to clone drive, you should contact a Data Recovery specialist. NETGEAR does provide this type of service.

Plus the 4512 pending sector errors (which are just as bad as reallocated sectors, except the problem was detected on a read, not a write).

I agree.  There will likely still be some file corruption unless you are very lucky - and RAID won't be able to repair it.

When the values are so high, it's easy to miss them when reading ^^

Well spotted 😉

While ATA errors can be due to the disks or the chassis, Reallocated and Pending sectors are pure disk errors, so the NAS itself isn't the culprit.

I placed the order for new HDD. What if i will remove HDD 3 and install new HDD, will it will bring back dagta volume. Once i will get my data back i will replace HDD 4 also. Since it is the Raid 5 configuration what about Disk1 and Disk 2 those are not mirrored ?

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

Since you have two failing drives, you might not be able to get the data back.

Your best chance is to use paid netgear support (data recovery).  https://kb.netgear.com/69/ReadyNAS-Data-Recovery-Diagnostics-Scope-of-Service

As my NAS has hardware warranty till 2019 so in this case Netgear will not help to get back the data as this is the hardware fault.

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

This is not a ReadyNAS hardware fault but a Hard Drive hardware fault. Unless you purchased the ReadyNAS "populated" as a NETGEAR bundle, your drives aren't covered by the hardware warranty of your ReadyNAS.

Data Recovery is not in the scope of the hardware warranty or Support entitlement.

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

Ok as you advised for cloning is it possible if you can just share the steps how to clone the drivers?

i did some research and found some software for that. So i will have to remove both HDD's one by one and will connect with desktop to make the clone? i am afraid it will be difficult to convince the company to paid for data recovery as we suppose to have the backup in my case both failed togather and didn't give chance to backup the data. 😞

Re: Ready NAS 314 has Disk 4 ATA error in yellow color and Disk 3 high uncorrectable error count.

Cloning is part of the process with two failed disks.  You then might need to force the RAID array to mount.

ddrescue is a commonly used tool for cloning that's included with linux.
