ReadyNAS Duo v2 needs a disk- retire device or replace disks?

ReadyNAS Duo v2 needs a disk- retire device or replace disks?

Unit has a failing disk (1-2 reallocated sectors every couple of days), I am happy to just get a pair of larger drives to bump our capacity, swap 1, allow to sync, swap the other, unless there is a really good reason to upgrade the unit itself.

We are happy with the perfromance of the current unit.

No IT department so I want to spend as little time as possible futzing with it, and would like to not have to set up a new unit for backup to the ReadyNAS vault.

Thoughts?

What firmware are you running, and what size disks do you have installed now?

Stephen, thanks-

Firmware:

RAIDiator 4.1.14 [1.00a043]

Disks- 2 in X-RAID config, 500GB

Currently we are at 77% capacity, hence a capacity upgrade is warranted.

Hello David_C67,

It appears you are using the oldest architecture of ReadyNAS which is an OS4 of Sparc-based NAS.

I suggest you update the firmware first. Either update the firmware first before replacing one of the disks or replace one disk first. let it sync then once done, update the firmware.

Please see this article that may help you.

Regards,

Yes, my plan is to copy all the data to an external drive, upgrade firmware, then do the drives swap.

Sounds like going forwards with this unit isn't contraindicated.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo v1 h2 needs a disk- retire device or replace disks?

4.1.15 is the latest firmware for your Duo v1 h2.

2TB disks are the max supported by this unit. So you could use 2x2TB disks.

If you want higher performance then it would be time to get a new ReadyNAS and perhaps use the Duo for backups going forward.

1 TB drives and 2 TB drives are close in price, so I'd jump right to 2 TB.

Ignore the disk compatibility list - it hasn't been updated in a long time.  A NAS-purposed drive is suitable (either WDC Red or Seagate Ironwolf).  I use  the WDC WD20EFRX in my duo, it works well.
