I had something similar. Can you check these two things to see if it is what occurs in my situation
1) in windows when the USB Disk is plugged in and not recognised can you see it in explorer
2) when the USB Disk is plugged in and not recognised in windows explorer can you see it the share page of the NETGEAR web page as an smb share
if you can see it on the Netgear web page as SMB share but not in windows explorer then it is an issue with smb.conf in the os of the NAS

We reproduced the issue, and the issue has been fixed,

Hi,
Can I ask what the fix is and how we cna get the fix?

Hi Justlogical,
Sorry! I don't know the official FW release schedule.
The FW fix has been verified internally.
We will have BETA FW soon with the fix included.

We are having the same issue on multiple client devices and are having to reboot 6 or so to get the external drive to show up. Really need the fix.

Hi
I'm having issue with backups failing and I believe the issue reported in this thread still exists with firmware v6.6.1.
My hotplugged external USB3 drives are not recognised by the Web UI of our ReadyNAS 104.
I have the USB cable connected to the Rear Top USB port.
The last time a drive was shown as mounted was when I rebooted the ReadyNAS.
For ref, we use Western Digital MyBook Essential 3TB drives
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Essential-Drive-External/dp/B0042Z55RM
The kernel log though does show when I disconnect one drive in the morning and rotate it for another.

Tue Feb 28 2017 10:09:19 Backup: Error backup job MWF Backup Active Jobs: destination cannot be accessed. Checking the logs I see:
multiple backup_nnn_error.log files, each containing:
No USB storage was found at usb_port_3:3!
and also multiple backup_nnn_status files each containing the following message with the associated epoch:
BACKUP_STATUS__FAILED!!1487894742!!warn
I can send complete logs if required.
I'm not sure when this issue began, but I do remember with older versions of firmware the web UI always reported the external drives as connected/mounted.
Thanks

Sigh.. Just had to reboot the ReadyNAS again to mount the external USB backup drive in order to perform a backup. What a PITA.
Wait.. I can't believe it... Hot Swap has just worked!. I'm gonna have to perform more tests now.....
