Adding a NAS to the USB Port

I am trying to setup a network file server with the Nighthawk R7450.  Unfortunately, for unknown reasons even though the drive works beautifully through my network when it's attached to my Macbook Pro or my Macbook Air, when I connect it to the Nighthawk, it doesn't work.   In  the Advanced Settings  I can see the  "U-Drive"  so I attempt to add it and I get such a strange error it just says "Approved Devices!" with an exclamation mark.   But nothing happens.   So after researching your site, of  course the R7450 isn't listed but I find something that shows that the external drive should have it's own independent power source.  So I go to best buy and spend another $120 on an external WD External Drive.  Same exact error.   WHy is it so difficult to setup a Network File Drive on this NIghthawk?  Screen Shot 2021-07-27 at 6.32.36 PM.pngScreen Shot 2021-07-27 at 6.32.45 PM.png

What's the file system on the volume?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for
"USB device requirements".  (Note that APFS and exFAT are not among the
supported file systems.)

I can't (yet) see your pictures. In-line images must be approved

Attachments have no such limitation.  Of course, attachments have their
own one-per-message limitation.

   It's not _my_ site.

That depends.  RTFM failure?  High-quality software?  If you want
NAS, there's much to be said for investing in a real NAS box, as opposed
to trying to deal with Netgear's dancing-bear ReadySHARE stuff.
