Why? That's an extender. What would you be extending with it?

If you have DSL service, then I'd expect that having a DSL modem and
a router (possibly combined in one unit) whould be prety much required.

Perhaps. However, you seem to have almost no idea of what you need,
and if you get some kind of modem+router combination from your ISP, then
at least it ought to work, and you'd know to whom you could complain if
it doesn't.
Then, if you have some actual problem with whatever they provide, you
might start looking for solutions to that actual problem.
Or, you could just buy a random collection of various expensive
gizmos, slap them together, and hope for the best. Note, however, that
if your (unspecified) DSL connection speed is unspectacular, then the
fanciest router/extender/whatever in the world might make little
difference in your Internet experience.
Appropriate "junk" might serve you better than inappropriate
treasure.

The CM500 is a cable-TV-type modem, not a DSL modem. So, no.

Where did you look? Did you ask Frontier? I'd bet that they know.
