Hi velvetwood,
1. Are you referring to the Internet light (planet symbol)?
2. Please make sure that you are able to go online straight from the modem (ISP's device).
3. You can try MAC spoofing. Check the link below for the steps.

They tried to get me to pay, just to tell me suggestions on how to fix it as well. I've heard much better reviews for ASUS, and having owned one in another house ive also have had good luck with them.
