Does buying a modem affect the need of a Netgear nighthawk router

Actual model numbers would be more helpful than ambiguous/vague
descriptions.

Generally, you can connect at most one device direvtly to a modem,
either an actual client device or a NAT router. "other devices"
suggests that you wouldn't be satisfied with one client device.
If I use a LAN cable I get 20 download 6 upload however it fluctuates a lot so it’s not always that good. In terms of ping sometimes it can be 12 sometimes it can be 60.
I don’t need to use a LAN cable I could just use the WiFi like you do on your phone but I’ve always found using a LAN cable much more reliable
