Firmware update needed?

Firmware update needed?

I got an email from Netgear today saying I need to update my firmware for an important security fix. Following their instructions I logged into router administration and checked for updates. I was told that I am already on the latest version.

I am on V1.0.1.24_1.0.18. I see on the website that there is a V1.0.1.26_1.0.19. Is this the version that the email was referring to? Do I need to install it?

Hi @dbsf,

You can check the links below to manually install the latest firmware version of the router and do a factory reset.

My problem started when I removed the ReadySHARE drive from my R6400 router and placed it on another machine as a USB drive because the coping of 8 GB would have taken me over 30 minutes over the network and less than 7 minutes when used as a USB connected directly to that machine. After the copy, I noticed there was a folder in the new directory that shouldn’t have been there so I deleted it (both on the ReadySHARE drive and in the newly copied directory) That’s when things my trouble began! Some of the new folders had duplicate files in them which made no sense to me. So I took the ReadySHARE drive and plugged it back into my R6400 router, and looked at the drive from another machine on the network. All files and folders looked okay. No duplication anywhere. So I moved the drive back to the machine where I had experienced the problem, and low and behold, the problem still existed! That is when, for some dumb reason, I logged on to the router, and I got a message that a new Firmware version was available. So without thinking, I went ahead and installed the new Firmware version. And that is when things REALLY went south! When I plugged the drive back into the R6400 router, the ReadySHARE drive wasn’t recognized by the router. The R6400 said the drive didn’t exist it kept asking me to plug in a drive. As a standalone USB drive it was OK, as far as the R6400 was concerned, the ReadySHARE drive did not exist. It kept telling me to plug a drive into the USB 3 port.

That is when old programming training kicked in. What was the LAST thing you did before things really went south? Delete some files… no, install new Firmware! So I went to Netgear’s web site and downloaded the previous Firmware release. After reinstalling R6400-V1.0.1.24_1.0.18 everything started to work again. The duplicate files were gone and the ReadySHARE drive was visible to the R6400 and to all machines on my network.

The only conclusion I can come to is, with so many complaints about not being able to see or access a ReadySHARE drive, that there is a problem with R6400-V1.0.1.24_1.0.19. So to all those having a problem with accessing their ReadySHARE drives, try going back a version or two in firmware, and see if the problem get resolved. If not, you can always reinstall the latest Firmware.
