Internet Speeds

Hello. I currently have the netgear R6400v2 router and the Arris surfboard SB6141 modem. My ISP is xfinity and I currently have 800mbps download speed as the plan. I currently just updated my router to the latest software and before I was getting about 280 mbps and after installing the latest software I am now barely getting 200mbps. i've been reading and I saw that if you have had issues post software installment that you should reset the modem with the button on the back which I will after this post and reply if there was an improvement but I was wondering how could I improve my internet speed to have what I am paying for? Is it the router that needs changing? The modem? I heard that the 2in1 that your ISP gives you isn't that great which is why I bought the two a couple of years ago. Also I ran the internet speed test on my PC with CAT 8 ethernet cable before and post software update. Thank you for anyone willing to help me.

What is the device, brand name and model number, you are connecting to the R6400v2 and what application are you using to test the throughput capacity?

How is this unnamed device being connected to the router, by Wi-Fi or by Ethernet cable?  If Wi-Fi, what band, 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

The binary file used to update a router is generally referred to as firmware and not software.  What is the version number of the firmware you used to update your router?  The term "The Latest" does not provide sufficient information to verify if it is correct and there may be additional versions available you are not aware of.

You have posed your question in a community addressing Nighthawk series R6700 through R9000 routers.  The community addressing issues with the R6000 through R6400 routers is located here:

Some background reading on your part could be helpful to your understanding of Wi-Fi routers real world throughput capacities as compared to the throughput capacities shown on specification sheets.  See here:

My setup: Xfinity -> Netgear CM2050V -> Netgear R9000 (Voxel V1.0.4.71.1HF)

Re: Internet Speeds

A couple things.

1. You say you have the arris SB6141. Thats a 8x4 modem. Its only going to hit *maybe* 300mbps on xfinity. Its not rated to your 800mbps plan. If you want to hit the speeds that you're paying for, you'll need to upgrade the modem. I'd recommend a docsis 3.1 modem.

2. the R6400v2 is a pretty base model router. You can expect around that 200-300mbps out of its wireless connection. Wired you can hit faster speeds but you'll need to make sure that parental controls, access controls, traffic monitoring, and qos are all disabled. If you had them enabled or this happened after a firmware change, try factory resetting the router. During the install, leave those services disabled.  But again, keep in mind, you aren't going to hit faster than that 300mbps (ish) until you update your modem. It might even be the modem bottlenecking you at 200mbps as I'm not sure what xinifty rates that modem to anymore as its a very base model docsis 3.0 device.

Current setup: CM2000-> RBE973S-> Trendnet TEG-S380-> GS716T-> pi-hole
also in AP setup: RAXE500->EAX80
1.4gig download/100mbps upload from Xfinity

Re: Internet Speeds

Recently setup pfsense on a protectli vault. I have a fiber connection running through an ONT that i directly connect to my appliance. I run my 2 PC’s through an unmanaged switch that’s connected to the appliance. My speeds are exactly how they should be with 500/500 on the two PC’s. However, When I connect my old netgear router that I have put into access point mode into the switch, the internet speed for all devices drops to 90/90 or lower and I start having issues connecting to games and other applications. Went and bought all new cat6 cables incase this was the issue and the issue still occurs. Any suggestions on what might be causing the issue once I add the router(converted to access point) to my network? If i unplug the router from the switch all other devices hardwired are running normally.
