PR2000 bricked - can it be fixed?

Hi there,

Last night I stupidly tried updating the firmware to v1.0.0.15 on my PR2000 via the wireless. Needless to say, it appears to have corrupted the device. The wifi no longer works (when I set it to wireless mode, the power and internet lights come on as usual, but the USB light turns on instead of the wifi light).

The restore button does nothing either. I've tried holding it in for ages. Unplugging it while holding it in. Pressing it multiple times. Etc. Nothing.

I've tried plugging it in to my computer to use in wired mode, but the computer doesn't seem to be able to access it. Perhaps because it was in range extender mode or something? I don't know.

I also can't find the CD that came with it (if there even was one - I don't remember).

Is it completely bricked or can it be fixed? Please help!

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like it is really messed up.  If I were you I'd bite the bullet and go for new replacement.  To have any hope at least CFE (common firmware environment) should be intact. Sorry again.

It still has a chance to be unbricked, can you ping it  using the command prompt? I would look in youtube and search for "how to unbrick a router" and you'll have to use the tftp method, download the program tftp2 and use that to try and unbrick it.

I did try pinging it with the cmd prompt. Got nothing. I will try tftp. Thanks!

Unable to ping and you want to try tftp?  When access to router is impossible, what tftp is gonna do? Firs thing in order is hard reset the router

to bring it back tp default router mode. When you press the reset button how long do you hold it down? You should hold ir down until indicators

start blinking and let go of the button.  Purpose if hard reset by button is initiallize the router and when all is well to boot it up to ready state.

Re: PR2000 bricked - can it be fixed?

I have no idea what I'm doing here, to be honest. I didn't realize tftp wouldn't work if pinging didn't work.

I have tried using the hard reset button. I've held it down for at least a minute with no change to the lights. I'm not getting any blinking or change in color or anything. It's not rebooting.

Rats. Well, thanks anyway!

EDIT: @VE6CGX Hang on, I just tried the reset button again with the router on wireless and the USB light is now blinking. None of the other lights are, though. Is that a good sign?

Re: PR2000 bricked - can it be fixed?

Having the USB light blinking didn't seem to make any difference. I've gone and bought myself a WN3000RP range extender as a replacement. Hopefully it'll work just as well (if not even better) than the PR2000.

I can't even guess what status the unit is in for now. It's called result unknown after failed attempt to update the firmware.

Re: PR2000 bricked - can it be fixed?

Same thing happenned to me.  Updated to new firmware (with network cable not WIFI) and my router is now bricked.  Will not assign IP.  Tried to manually set IP and TFTP in and no luck.  Netgear wants me to pay for them to help correct.  I know we don't get free tech support aftee X days, but it just seems unfair when I followed the process to update.  Oh well.  They don't make this anymore and now I need to find a similar device.  I liked it had both WAN and LAN ports.

Re: PR2000 bricked - can it be fixed?

tftp has prerequisite to work. CFE has to be intact and it should present the window to upload f/w using tftp method.

Router should respond to ping using  router address with TTL=100, then tftp will work. Without understand what it can

and can't it is not easy task.
