R6300V2 Firmware is Invalid

My router is on firmtare version 1.0.1.72_1.0.21.  I am trying to upgrade the firmware to the current version.  I am accessing the Genie from my Windows 10 laptop.  The Genie indicates that "A router firmware upgrade is available".  I click on that and receive a message that a new version has been found.  This version is 1.0.4.46_10.0.93.   So, I proceed and then receive a "Firmware is Invalid" message.  I then tried to download firmware updates manually and apply them but only receive the same message.  Any idea how to resolve?

   That's pretty old.

Using some web browser or other?  Wired or wireless connection?
(Wired is generally considered safer.)

Trust no one, I always say.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.  (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)
When that fails because of a deficient User Manual, try:

"apply them" how, exactly?  Which file(s) did you try to load into
the router?  Hint: Anything ending in ".zip" is wrong.

I know nothing, but if you really have an R6300v2, and you're doing
the manual update properly with a suitable (".chk") file, and it still
fails, then I might try updating in smaller steps, rather than taking
one jump from earliest to latest.
