Router refuses to update settings

Model: R6400v2

Firmware: 1.04.12_10.0.104

All I wanted to do was change my Wi-Fi password. Should have been simple. First the app insisted I update the firmware. Fine. Once that was complete and the router rebooted, the app refused to connect (logon timed out over and over). Tried a few things and ultimately reinstalled the app and factory reset the Nighthawk. But no joy. The app would connect but refused to push any changes. "Configuration error" it kept telling me. So I tried going through routerlogin.net. It got stuck in a "let's reset your router password" loop.

Five factory resets later, I finally got through enough on routerlogin on my desktop to update settings (WiFi name/password) hit Apply and... nothing. Just sat there. My Wi-fi would see the new network names but wouldn't connect, never even giving me a password prompt. Tried connecting to the router via Ethernet and the computer wouldn't even see it. Couple more factory resets and I got it back to the default Wi-fi network/password and left it there so I can at least work in the morning.

The firmware seems to be the latest but it also seems to be the start of all my problems. I've been able to administer the router through the app with no issue for the last year or so. Now I'm afraid to even try renaming the networks or changing the password for fear of the router losing its mind again. I'm no network whiz, so if things don't work as expected, I'm kinda stuck.

Does anyone have some dummy-friendly suggestions of what might be happening and how to fix it?

First, if there is one, it might also help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that sits between this router and the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

Apps are best avoided when you want to do anything slightly complicated.

That doesn't look like any of the recognised versions of firmware for that router.

Perhaps you missed out a digit.
