Re: Turning offf router at nights

There should be no harm with daily power cycling. But if you are worried about devices accessing the Internet at night, many routers can be set up to shut off Internet access on a programmed schedule. This will save you the inconvenience of having it to turn it on every morning. In addition, devices can continue communicating with each other over the home network. This could be useful if, say, you have a networked printer or hard drive for printing and file backup, respectively.

If you are trying to save on electricity, most routers will consume 10 to 40 watts. Assuming the cost of electricity is $0.13 per kilowatt-hour (source: U.S. EIA), then 40 watts will cost $0.0052 per hour. That's slightly more than 1/2 a penny per hour or around 10 cents per night.
