Wireless device ip address shows as --

I went to connected devices and there's a wireless device that has dashes all across-the-board: the name the IP address, everything. Does that mean there's an intruder?

Dashes all across-the-board? Do you mean that the details are hidden?

 

Where are you looking to see this?

 

If you mean the Attached Devices page in the browser graphical user interface (GUI), what happens when you click on this entry?

 


Does that mean there's an intruder?

Hard to tell without more information. If you can f9nd the Mac address you can begin to work out what it might be.

 

You don't tell us anything about your Netgear equipment. I assume that this is a router of some sort.

It's a R6200v2. Yes, the connected devices GUI. Nothing is clickable, just dashes. Here's the cut 'n paste below ... and now there are even more dashed entries:

What firmware version do you have on the device? Newer firmware may have changed the GUI.

A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.

You are not looking at the Attached Devices page. That has the editable entries.

 

What you see probably includes devices that were connected to your network, but aren't there any more.

 

Try roaming around in the Access Control area.

 

Manuals are always a good place to start.

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Allow or Block Access to Your Network.


What does "f9nd the Mac address" mean??

 


Every device that connects to your network has a unique Mac address. The first bit if it will tell you who made the device.

 

MAC Address Lookup - MAC Lookup Online

 

This can help you to track down what it is.

My router shows the firmware version:

The download page seems to imply I am up to date?

And I definitely am looking at the attached devices page... nothing clickable.

 

All but one of those dashed MAC address searches were not found. One I believe is a smart display my daughter brough home from college.

 

Do you think I should download the Genie App? I have it already, maybe it's been updated? I think Norton is blocking my download so far...

 

I tried to have the interface check for firmware updates, but it just kept flashing:

Yes. That's the only way to do it. One recent message was from someone with what they thought was "the latest", but it was actually a year old and four versions behind the newest.  Hence the need to check.

It depends on what you mean by the genie app. Over the years, Netgear has put that label on various things. I am a fan of the desktop genie for Windows. (There's also one for Mac.) Netgear wants it to die, but some of us persist.

 

It is there on the downloads page for your router, but that link seems to be broken, which may explain what you see.

You should always update firmware, expect when it causes problems. If that happens you can roll back

 

For the phantoms, there are ways of keeping an eye on alien invaders. My line is that I investigate where those unrecognised entries come from before I get scared. Sadly, that takes a bit more local research rather than a question in a place like this.

 

If you are the sort of person who gets twitchy about Internet security, plenty of people will sell you fancy subscription solutions. I rely on common sense and the increasingly severe protection that comes with Windows, browsers and my Internet service provider.
