No, switches in general don't have this ping function for PD devices, although it would be interesting. Thanks for your advice here.
Let's try to solve your issue. First, on the Community it would be good for us and informative for our members to disclose which switch you have.
NETGEAR Smart Managed Switches and NETGEAR Fully Managed Switches can assign a timer to PoE operation. So based on your schedule, you could power off, and power back on your unstable PD every night, maybe between 4am and 4:05am. This way a reboot could help your PD device every day.
Other possibility, you could use NETGEAR Management System NMS300. Available via download for free here: http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/modules-accessories/nms300.aspx?cid=wmt_netgear_or...
With NMS300 you can monitor
NETGEAR Smart Managed Switches and NETGEAR Fully Managed Switches, as well as any third-party IP device based on its IP address and if no SNMP, based on ICMP monitoring, so based on ping. NMS300 will send you an email when your PD device monitored by ICMP is down.
Hope this helps,

Re: PD alive detect
Hi NetFreak100,
Welcome to NETGEAR Community.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) process was developed and standardized under IEEE 802.3af. It's mainly used by terminating equipment which consumes little power. The technology is used typically in IP telephones, cameras or wireless transmission devices such as WLAN Access Points or Bluetooth Access Points. IEEE 802.3af PSE devices have a test mechanism to protect connected incompatible devices from being damaged. Only devices which have an authenticating characteristic based on the IEEE 802.3af standard receive current via the data cable. The whole detection and classification fully follow 802.3af/at standard, can't have any interuption. Back to your case, PoE SW acting as power supplying, PD could reload once crash happen in my mind.
