Switch Standards

Hello, everyone,

I have a question about the switch XS708T, 10-Gigabit-Smart-Managed-Pro.

What LAN standards is it backward compatible with?
I have only found information containing 1 GbT and 10 GbT. Is that true?
Which 802 standard should it support?

Besides 1 GbT and 10 GbT, the 5 GbT standard is especially important for me.

Re: Switch Standards

@ all

I have a solution that is really smart.

I buy a 10GbT NIC and install it into the PC. A PCI-e 3 x 16 interface is still available on the PC. Then the PC is ready for 10GbT. The NIC costs about 99,- €.

Re: Switch Standards

Grüezi DarkZeroThirteen,

The XS7xxT switches are indeed not MultiGig capable.

Depending on the features you need for this 10G/MultiGig switch, the XS724EM might a possible alternate device.

Re: Switch Standards

@DarkZeroThirtee,

Welcome to the community! 🙂

The 10GBASE-T is backward compatible with Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.  As reference, read pages 1 and 4 of the XS708T Data Sheet here

Which 802 standard should it support?

The XS708T supports the following standards:

a. IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet

b. IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging

c. IEEE 802.3ad - LAGs (LACP)

d. IEEE 802.3x (full duplex and flow control)

e. IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol

f. IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol

g. IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol

h. IEEE 802.1x RADIUS port access authentication
i. IEEE 802.1p COS

j. IEEE 802.3 Ethernet

k. IEEE 802.3u 100BASE-T

l. IEEE 802.3ab 1000BASE-T

m.IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T 10Gbps Ethernet Over Copper Twisted Pair Cable

n. IEEE 802.3ae 10-Gigabit Ethernet Over Fiber (10GBASE-LRM) -

o. IEEE 802.3ae 10-Gigabit Ethernet Over Fiber (10GBASE-SR, 10GBASE-LR, 10GBASE-ER, 10GBASE-LX4)

p. IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-SX/LX

Besides 1 GbT and 10 GbT, the 5 GbT standard is especially important for me

If you need a 5GBase-T port, you may want to consider the MS510TX and MS510TXPP as well as the XS512EM and XS724EM switches.  Both of the MS510TX and MS510TXPP switches have 1-port RJ-45 10 Gigabit Ethernet Copper (100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10GBASE-T).  Whereas all RJ-45 copper ports of both of the XS512EM and XS724EM switches supports 5GBase-T.  For more information, kindly check their respective data sheets below:

MS510TX / MS510TXPP Data Sheet

XS512EM / XS724EM Data Sheet

Re: Switch Standards

The XS724EM is not an alternative. 24 ports are clearly too many and beyond the budget.

My solution would be a switch with the following specifications:
max. 8 ports (1GbT, 5GbT, 10GbT)

Regarding the XS708T:
An alternative could also be GBIC which can be built into one of the two SFP+ slots. It would only have to support 5GbT or am I making a mistake?
Does Netgear offer something like this or can you take any one?

The XS512EM switch has 12 RJ-45 copper ports that supports 100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10GBASE-T.

The 1G/10G SFP+ ports of the XS708T are shared (or combo) ports.  The XS708T does not support 5GBASE-T.
