2nd GS308 managed switch does not get an IP

Hello,

Forgive me if I ask something very obvious or something impossible.

This is my situation. I bought a second GS308T switch to extend my network. The first one connected to my router already has an IP assigned via DHCP, bu the second (new) one who is connected to the first does not get an IP. Why is that? And how can I solve that?

Exchanged to new devices, or A-B to B-A?

Ensure both switches are operating on the current firmware -> GS308T | Smart Managed Pro Switch | NETGEAR Support - as of writing it's 1.0.1.2 (don't be confused with 1.0.0.12).

Do a factory reset if the status is potentially unclear or undefined.

Perform a Cable Test on both switches...

Re: 2nd GS308 managed switch does not get an IP

@andrevanm,

Welcome to the community! 🙂

Is the 2nd GS308T directly connected to the 1st GS308T?  If yes, what is the color/behavior of the port LED lights connecting the 2nd GS308T and 1st GS308T?

What is the current firmware version of the 1st and 2nd GS308T switches?

Are there VLANs configured on both 1st and 2nd GS308T switches?

Regards,

Re: 2nd GS308 managed switch does not get an IP

Thanks for  your reply DaneA. I appreciate it very much.

Concerning your questions:

Is the 2nd GS308T directly connected to the 1st GS308T?

>Yes

If yes, what is the color/behavior of the port LED lights connecting the 2nd GS308T and 1st GS308T?

>1st GS308T: once in a while blinking orange shortly

>2nd GS308T: green and blinking

What is the current firmware version of the 1st and 2nd GS308T switches?

>1st GS308T: I think same as 2nd switch as it is brand new.

>2nd GS308T: Boot version: 1.0.0.1  Software version: 1.0.0.12

Are there VLANs configured on both 1st and 2nd GS308T switches?

>No

Something wrong there.

Tried a different cable?

Tried a different port for the link on either of the two switches?

Re: 2nd GS308 managed switch does not get an IP

Thanks Schumaku for your suggestion.

I don't think it is the cables as when I connect the cable to the second switch (remove it from the switch) and connect it to my computer, I do have proper connection. I also tried different ports but to no avail.

So test different port on the other switch.

I need to make a correction. The led on the 2nd switch is once in a while orange, not green.

I did but to no avail. Actually I exchanged both switches.

Curious - what made it work as expected - current firmware?

Re: 2nd GS308T managed switch does not get an IP

First of all, big thank you for your great help.

I did all the suggestions you gave me. First, reset the switches. Secondly upgraded the firmware. Then I noticed that issue was still there. So I tried another cable between switch1 and switch2, that did the trick. To me not very obvious as the cable was working when it was connected directly to my laptop.

Again your help was greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear that.

Can you tell us what is the difference between the working cable and the non-working one?

Thank you.

Re: 2nd GS308T managed switch does not get an IP

Good question.

To be honest: I do not know exactly. The cable was working for the laptop but not for the switch. But in order to try my chances, I replaced the connector on both sides and this did the trick.
