FS726T throughput problems with 4k HDR streamed content

I live in a condo that uses several of the FS726T, installed new about 14 years ago. Typically one downlink port connects to each condo; each condo then has its own router or switch to manage their internal usage. The uplink port is to the building's router and firewall. The FS726Ts are configured with the VLAN to block traffic across the downlink ports, so that the systems in different condos can't see each other. All wiring to the condos is CAT5; the uplink is either CAT5 or CAT5E.

In the last year or so people have started to load up the network more, but the graphs of the traffic show that the ISP connection (1Gbps) never saturates. But a particular problem is that 4k HDR streaming content, even when connected wired, is not getting through; the content provider is dropping the content quality to 1080p (sometimes less). This occurs even when Speedtest is showing good throughput, maybe 65Mbps or so.

There's a suspicion that something in the FS726T is the culprit: jitter, or latency, or a bottleneck that's not obvious and might not have been as significant an issue 15 years ago. Or the switches are just getting old and failing in some interesting way.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem and come up with an explanation, or at least a solution? "Get a new switch" may be an acceptable answer if we think it will solve the problem).

Thanks!

Re: FS726T throughput problems with 4k HDR streamed content

You've got 2 problems.

1. the FS726T only has 2 gigabit ports. The other ports are all fast ethernet 10/100mbps ports. so that'll bottleneck

2. Cat 5. Cat 5 is only rated to 10/100mbps. Cat 5e is rated to gigabit (and a little faster for short runs). The occassional cat 5 can potentially run gigabit if a high enough quality, 4 pairs, and short enough length. But its a sketchy setup.

so even if you upgrade your switches to gigabit, it doesn't mean the condos will receive gigabit connections. But they might be able to do better than the 65mbps that they're getting.

(fyi, you can stream 4k with a 25-40mbps connection)
