Insight Remote Management Arrives on Smart Managed Pro Switches #Blog

Insight-on-smart-pro-switches.png

Iphie Chen, Product Line Manager for Smart Managed Pro Switches has posted an informative blog announcing the imminent availability of 3rd generation NETGEAR GS108Tv3 and GS110TPv3, 8-Port Gigabit Smart Managed Pro Switches. These switches provide a great value, offering configurable L2 network features like advanced VLAN support and PoE operation (for GS110TPv3 only) scheduling for deploying VoIP or IP surveillance.

These are the first Smart Pro Managed switches with the ability to connect with and be managed by the NETGEAR Insight Cloud management system. This means your business can either use the standard web-management GUI you are familiar with, or the manage-from-anywhere Insight Management system.

Unlocking cloud-based remote management via NETGEAR Insight has never been easier, and requires no additional cloud keys, local servers, network portals, proxy appliances or a VPN. You can directly connect your switch to the cloud and allow remote management. No additional hardware or software — we baked it right in! Just switch to Insight Cloud Management mode using our browser-based local management tool.

Re: Insight Remote Management Arrives on Smart Pro Switches #Blog

To avoid even creating more confusion - may I kindly ask Netgear to use _only_ the term "Smart Managed Pro" and avoid e.g. "Smart Pro" and "Smart Pro Managed" for this family of switches @IphieChen @BretD please? Just the same it's used all over in the Netgear Web https://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/smart/, in the documentation, and the KB (where we have still plenty of confusing designations, too).

One more: "Learn more in the NETGEAR Connections blog" link does currently point to the "Smart Managed Pro with Insight" switch models - please edit! @BretD  ... should be https://blog.netgear.com/blog/introducing-new-gigabit-ethernet-smart-switches-with-cloud-management/

I've corrected the link to the blog.

Additionally, I think it's sensible to ask us to keep the name consistant, but I do know that occasionally it has to be shortened for space considerations.

Thanks for your feedback @schumaku

Re: Insight Remote Management Arrives on Smart Managed Pro Switches #Blog

Will this come to "Smart Managed Plus" as well? The GS308E just came out, the installation guide already request me to use the insight app and add the switch from there, but this is not working. Have been working with customer support, they run into same issue, and are confused as well that according to their KB the 'Smart Managed Plus' is not supported by Insight, whereas the installation manual says something different...

Hope you can help create clarity on the roadmap.

Unlikley, at least for most of the current models. The Insight cloud management integration does require (much) more resources [code/Flash, CPU, memory] than what is available on the Smart Managed Plus switches.

The Insight App is able to discover the Smart Managed Plus and Smart Managed Pro devices on the LAN, assist with the product registration*, and offer a link to the device's Web UI.

*This requires that the network where the Insight discoverable unit and the mobile with the App are on a network able to reach the Internet AFAIK.

There must be a lot of confusion...:

  • The Insight App Instant Discovery does also work for the Smart Managed Plus devices.
  • Smart Managed Plus devices can not be managed by the Insight App resp. by the Insight Cloud - only discovered on the same [W]LAN and reached by a Link the Web browser.
  • Only Insight devices and Insight-enabled deivces like these two new Smart Managed Pro models can be Insight managed (App, cloud portal, ...).

Yes, confusion all around. The insight app reports these devices as "Insight manageable", but finally fails in adding them to a location.

Note in first picture the devices are listed twice: 1x as discovered device on the network, 1x as registered device (registered through mynetgear website).

So wondering if this is a bug in that "it should not work" or in the sense that "it should work" as insight managed device..

The "Insight Manageable Device" category indication in the App is very misleading at least - Netgear did not heard my complaint on that before - it should be something like "Insight Discovered Devices". At this moment, with the device unclaimed, it's undefined if the device can be added to the Insight management, or just registered to "Limited Support" state.

Can see just the attached image, the other images require moderation. The same device with the same MAC address (and serial number - not sure if all Smart Managed Plus have software readable addresses) should become visible just once.

The same switch (permitting it's the same MAC address shown) does show up in the App under two names in the App why ever. For curiosity ... also with the same IPv4 address? (Pixelating RFC1918 addresses does not make much sense - millions of sites are using the same.) AFAIK the MyNetgear site product registration does not allow defining any kind of names or alias - so that duplicated entry with that other name came in on a different way.

Afraid, I'm just an active Insight and Insight Pro user and don't have any database access. Can't say if the "unclaimed" units are part of the Insight cloud data, or just handled on the device/app locally. Wild idea? Drop all App data, uninstall, and re-install the App.

You can expect the GS308E show similar to your GS724TPv2 with "Limited Support".
