MKV & ASF video file support?

Hi Guys, Had my 1TB stora a few days now and apart from a slight glitch the other day which stopped me connecting to it (see my previous post - fixed with a hard reset) I am rather impressed with my first NAS 🙂

So far I have been able to stream the following to my PS3
photos (.jpg)
music (.mp3)
video (.wmv .avi .mov)
but .ASF or MKV files will not open due to "unsupported data"

The only way around this seems to be to use a PC application like Tversity or PMS but that kind of defeats the point of owning a NAS for me as i was doing this before.

Can you tell me wether future updates with support ASF & MKV files and other file types?

Thanks.

Re: MKV & ASF video file support?

Can your PS3 handle.mkv files?
90% of my files are mkv and I can stream no problem to XBMC.

Re: MKV & ASF video file support?

No it seems the ps3 can't handle MKV files natively.

The only way is to transcode them on-the-fly using a media server app like PS3 Media Server or Tversity.

Looks like I've answered my own question then!

How about ASF files? Dont ask me what they are but its a format my old camera used to use when taking videos! I;ve got loads of these files but the PS3 can't read them! 😞

Re: MKV & ASF video file support?

i have just bought the stora and i have also problems with streaming .mkv files.

I want to stream the file to BluRay player BD-D5500 and do also get the "unsuprted format" info.
The BluRay supports mkv.

What can i do. If i do not get mkv support i will send it back

I have the same BluRay player (Samsung BD-D5500) and it streams MKV files from my Stora. If you get an "unsupported format" message it is either the file itself, or the BluRay player is unable to decode it. Nothing to do with the Stora.

Re: MKV & ASF video file support?

that sounds great. you have the same setup as I.
I hope i can solve the issue.

But I still think its the stora as
1. the file can be played via USB
2. the file can be played via LAN directly from my Notebook
(using once allshare from Samsung or playing directly from Notebook folder).

I have tested with 2 different files. once full HD once SD.
BD-D5500 should have the latest FW, just updated some days ago.

But the Stora update could not be installed after DL.
I read somewhere that this is an kwown issue.

Maybe i try this today afternoon again.

Do you have any more hints what i could check?

the stora doesn't decode any of the files it just stores them, so it's all decoded via the box you are playing them on

Re: MKV & ASF video file support?

Yes, this was clear for me. The player I want to stream to is able to decode to.

I have played little bit in the web-menu and have seen that I in the context menu of the folder i have the possibility to share the folder.
under more sharing options i can explicitly tick "Media Players".
Until know i thought that the folder "our folder" (translated from german) is already shared to all in the network. And indeed music could be played and movies files found, but not played.

Could this be the reason for getting the message "unsuported format!
I will try today evening at home
