Hi guys,
First aplogies if theres already a step by step procedure on how to ping to this switch in this forum. I only have one computer available to me at the moment and I would like to simply ping a gs105 neatgear gigabit switch using a network cable. (OS windows 7)
Now I have already attempted the following things
1) using wireshark to get the ip address
No Time Source Destination Protocol Length Info
1 0.000000 192.168.137.1 239.255.255.250 SSDP 318 NOTIFY * HTTP/1.1
However, using IP address 239.255.255.250 when i ping gets me a time out error
C:\>ping 239.255.255.250
Pinging 239.255.255.250 with 32 bytes of data
Request timed out.

Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 239.255.255.250:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
2) executing an ipconfig at a command prompt
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.137.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
I get this result when hook up an ethernet cable to the switch however i get the following output when i ping to 192.168.137.1
With ethernet cable connected
C:\>ping 192.168.137.1
Pinging 192.168.137.1 with 32 bytes of data

with ethernet cable NOT connected!

so obviously i know this isnt pinging to the switch either!
and so now im at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi marcosgu,
Welcome to the community!
At first, the IP address that you get from Wireshark is multicast IP(239.255.255.250), not Switch IP address, obviously ping this IP is unreachable.
If you want to get Switch IP address, I suggest you discover switch with Smart Control Center (SCC) software. And this tool can discover, manage and login Switch with HTTP. You could download this tool from Netgear downloadcenter with below link:

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Ok so I installed the smart control software (v1.1.3.3) off the netgear website and when i go to "discover" i see no devices listed at all. I made sure that the ethernet connection adapter (under the adapters tab) was checked off.
I dont know if it makes a difference but I tried both ways of assigning an iP address and assigning an IP address automatically (DHCP) and both ways I see nothing listed. i saw somewhere that there is another possible software called Prosafe Plus Utility.
I am going to look and read some more.

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi marcosgu,
Sorry, as your switch gs105v4 is plus switch, it only support Prosafe Plus Utility tool to discover. SCC only can discover Smart switch.
So could you try to discover gs105v4 with Utility again?

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi EricZ,
So, Im still not showing anything when I use the ProSafe Plus.. I did some more research and I noticed that the "Local Area Connection" (when i connect an ethernet cable to the switch) is showing as "unidentified network". I think perhaps maybe this is contributing to the problem. I have no idea at this point and I have also tried a whole laundry list of ideas to resolve the "unidentified network" status as well.

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi marcosgu,
What's your network topo?
Internet----Router-----gs105v4-----PC?
You mean when the PC connected to gs105v4, the LAN showing as 'unidentified network', and the PC cannot get IP address?
We double confirm again, the switch gs105v4 is an unmanaged switch, actually this switch doesn't have management IP, so PC cannot ping Switch and cannot manage it. This Switch only passthrough all of the traffic and do not deal with it.
I suggest you can check whether PC can ping Router not?

@Retired_Member, the GS105v4 is not a ProSAFE Plus switch. It is simply unmanaged. There is no IP interface, nor configuraiton utility, to manage an unmanaged switch. ProSAFE Plus switches have an E in the model name. This switch simply switches traffic.

Marking this original request as solved. You can't ping an unmanaged switch.

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi All,
Kohdee and ElaineP are correct. I could not execute a ping command successfully with the the switch in-line at all unless it was used to connect to say another computer perhaps (which is what I did).

Re: ping a gs105v4 gigabit switch
Hi Marcosgu
Sorry for the confusion but as my colleagues commendted the GS105 it's an unmanaged switch you can not ping it.
However I would like to recommend that if you want to have more visibility on the network and more control to use our Web Managed Plus switches (GS105E) as they come with VLAN,QoS, Cable Health, Port Mirroring, Static LAG, etc...
Hope it helps!
