4.2.18 under Snow Leopard
As I am working in a mixed environment, I have installed the latest firmware 4.2.18. This is the dialogue box I'm getting when trying to access a directory from SL:
Message from server <servername>
Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using
temporary CNID DB instead. Check server messages
for details. Switching to read-only mode.
Heeeeeelp !
(PS: Would be nice to be able to upload images to the forum)

Re: 4.2.18 under Snow Leopard
Answering my own question: The error above was accompanied by a lack of permission to write/delete any file ('no permission or maybe a locked volume') which really is what the error meant when I think about it.
The solution was somewhat unexpected but worked:
I solved this by first rebooting the NAS once more and then rebooting my Mac. I have done both of that and have not had the CNID DB error nor any permission errors since. The NAS is being accessed just fine now by a 10.6.8 and 10.7 machine.
Hopefully this helps others, too.
