Admin login repeatedly fails. Can log in via ssh.

Hi,

I have a ready nas duo that's been in use for some years now. Time Machine and AFP file sharing have been working fine so I haven't had to log into the admin UI in quite some time. This means it's likely a few updates behind of course.

I'm unable to log in using any of the accounts I've set up, nor the common defaults (netgear1 et all). The user/password combination for my primary user does still work for AFP.

I'm also able to ssh in directly as root, and can run passwd for the relevant users. Again, this has no impact on the admin UI.

Any ideas? Thanks!

The admin user is admin.

Have you checked the fullness of the root volume?

What error do you get when trying to access the web admin page?

Any add-ons installed?

Ok, I was able to get in with 'admin' and the root account password.

Now I can access the admin web UI, etc. I changed the time machine password, and can now connect from the macbook air I'm hoping to restore an image too. The image shows up in the list under Time Machine or Migration Assistant now, however it is not usable. Oldest Backup and Latest Backup are both blank.

Looking at the underlying file system via ssh I find there is data in /c/.timemachine/jpwpdx.sparsebundle . Is there a way to make this accessible again or is it hosed?

Thanks again!

I'm not a mac guy, so I don't have experience with timemachine.

I do know that you can access the full c volume (including .timemachine) over the network if you use SMB and NAS admin credentials.  I believe timemachine requires AFP, but you might be able to copy the sparsebundle that way.  You could also try moving (or copying) the sparsebundle to a share that has AFP enabled, and see you can restore it from there.

@mdgm-ntgr has done a lot with timemachine, hopefully he can help more.

Well, I updated the blank laptop to OSX Sierra, and now at least Migration Assistant sees the time machine volume. But after entering the username and password, the UI just goes back to the previous screen. Note that if you enter the incorrect password it does give a clear UI response to indicate that.

Any ideas? Can I somehow manually mount the TM sparse image?
