Apply factory reset without total data erase
Hello
I have ready nas pro 6 with 6 discs:
1-2: Volume c in Raid 1
3-4: Volume d in Raid 1
5-6: Volume e in Raid 1
I don't know if this is possible:
A) I remove discs 3,4,5 & 6
B) Backup in external HD of all data of discs 1 & 2
C) Apply factory reset with only discs 1 & 2 inside ReadyNas Pro
D) Create volume C and transfer the backup of this volume to the new created volume c
My doubt is... now if I put in the discs 3,4, 5 y 6... Raidar will format them or will preserve de data in this four discs?
Thanks!

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
I've never tried it. I wouldn't do it w/o a backup!
If you do attempt it, save the configuration pre-reset, and restore it post-reset. As usual, don't hot-insert when you reinstall 3-6,as the NAS will wipe the disks if you do that.

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
if the unit is damaged in the future, how I restore discs that contain data?
If I buy a new unit, when I add my current discs the new readynas will wipe them?

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
If you have working disks, you can migrate them to a new (compatible) unit. For instance, another Pro - but not an RNxxx.
When migrating (or in general when re-inserting) you need to power the NAS down first. If it is up and running, it will also do a drive test, then wipe it, and rebuild/resync.

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
You need to ensure the new unit had the same firmware version as the old before adding the disks.
I'd also second StephenB's advice about backup when contemplating manoeuvres like these.
Back it up. Use UPS.

if I take out one HD of the Readynas Pro and I connected it in the usb port of the Readynas, I can access the data from linux console?

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
Why do you want to do a factory reset but keep your data?
No. The md device, volume group etc. would have the same name as for disks inside the NAS.
However if you connected the disk to an ordinary Linux PC you could mount the array easily.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
I want to do a Factory reset withour lose all data because my OS is broken.
There is a dependences problem and a OS reinstall doesn't the solution:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
binutils: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.11) but 2.7-18lenny7 is to be installed
Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.6) but 4.3.2-1.1 is to be installed
cpp-4.7: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.11) but 2.7-18lenny7 is to be installed
fontconfig: Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.4.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: fontconfig-config but it is not going to be installed

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
I have done this successfully. I followed these instructions and it worked perfectly. The risk for possible data loss is huge though, make sure you have a backup.

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
This issue has already been resolved using a much safer method.

Re: Apply factory reset without total data erase
I thought you might ask that, but no. Whilst it is safer the steps are more involved.
