Hello,

I have what appears to be a dead Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ (V2) here. (I'm assuming it's a V2 because the P/N on the back is "RNV2-S2-0000". I received a few warning emails about the temperature being high on one of the drives, and then the unit died completely. A new power supply did not bring it back to life - the fan just blasts and the front screen lights up with a black bar across the bottom. My main goal at this point is to get my data off the device - Netgear tech support told me that if I get another chassis, I should be able to put my drives in it and get my data. I found a Netgear NV+ on ebay - I'm wondering if that would be compatible with what I have? This seems like an easier solution than trying to have netgear recover my data, right?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You have a NV+ (v1 - silver chassis). You need an Infrant/NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ (v1). The NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ v2 (charcoal chassis) was released November 13th 2011 and uses a different RAID format. You can't migrate disks from the NV+ (v1) to the v2.

Oh great, v1 is probably harder to find than v2...

I see on ebay a RNV1-S2-0000 - would that be compatible?

v1 is harder to find new, but second hand most used units on eBay are compatible. All Infrant NV+ units are v1 so yes that would be compatible. All Infrant units are Sparc units.

Put a spare disk in the Sparc unit and make sure the firmware is at least as up to date as in your current unit before migrating the disks across.

You note that you can't migrate between a ReadyNAS NV+ and a ReadyNAS NV+ V2 due to the different architectures. I have NV+ and have just bought a NV+ V2 and I want to move the disks across but I am not concerned about losing the data. Is that the same as migrating or when you refer to migrating, does that suggest leaving all intact? I note that when I put the disks in the V2, I get a corrupt root error. Is there a way forward for me?

Do a factory default via the boot menu as described in the hardware manual: http://www.ReadyNAS.com/docs

This will wipe the disks

Yep, tried that and it still came up as corrupt root. Stupidly decided to allow it to do a disk check and it is at 6% and taking a long time. I suspect I am just wasting my time with that.

Sounds like the disks will need to be hooked up to a PC and the partitions deleted then disks put back in the NAS and a factory default done. This is likely also due to the difference in the RAID format.

Yep, that thought had occured to me. I did exactly that to disk one but not two and three as I figured that the boot partition or whatever it is on these would be contained on disk one. There were three partitions on the disk so I just removed all to leave it in virgin state. I should have done all three disks, just laziness on my part 😞 Can I safely cancel this disk check which is now only 20%? I assume I would need to unplug it if it is safe to cancel. Thanks for you help, greatly appreciated.

There were no partitions on the second disk, all I could do with it was to initialise it (within Windows 7), plugged it back into the NAS and it is now happily installing the Xraid2 system. I will expand with the third disk later. All looks good from here, thanks again.
