Backup between readynas's on different networks - possible? How?
Hello All,
I have two Netgear ReadyNas'
I want to setup a daily backup that puts a copy of my work Nas on my home Nas every night - for security and peace of mind.
My two Nas drives are as follows;
Work= ReadyNas Duo - 1tb - running OS 4.1.16
Home = ReadyNas Pro 6 - 3tb - running OS 6.9.5 (legacy model upgraded and working perfectly)
Is this possible to setup and how would it be done? Are there any requirements to make it happen?
Thank you

Hi @mrdano-nas
Welcome to the Community!
Rsync backup is one way to do what you want. You can push or pull the data from your NAS. You will have to setup forwarding on your routers to allow connection of both NAS.
Here are guides for both OS 4 and OS 6 Rsync backup.
Hope this helps!
Regards

Thank you - do you mean 'port forwarding' on the routers?

Yes, Standard port for RSYNC is Port 873 and RSYNC over SSH uses Port 22.
You can also setup a VPN connection instead if your routers support it.

Would i need to have a static IP at each router / network to make this work?
I need to check if they are static or not.

It would be best if you have Static IP @mrdano-nas 🙂

While the two routers can have static IP addresses, the other option is to set up ddns. That would allow you to use a name for the backup destinations instead of an IP address - somethind like mrdano.ddns.net. There are some free DDNS services out there (noip.com for instance), but static IP addresses will cost you, and aren't really needed.
Some routers (Netgear Nighthawks for example) have DDNS built in, but you can also run a client on a PC. Either way you will be able to use it to reach the NAS.
