Best practise for expansion

It's in the manual I'm sure but I wanted to ask here also (redundancy). I have a RN102 with a single 6Tb disk in XRAID (I know, i like to live dangerously) and i want to upgrade the capacity to 8Tb with 2 x 8Tb discs for redundancy. Can i bung a single 8Tb disk in, let it fanny around for a bit, take the 6Tb out and replace it with the 2nd 8Tb or is it not as simple as it should be?

Re: Best practise for expansion

yes.

insert 8tb in slot 2

wait for rebuild to complete (volume redundant)

remove 6tb

insert other 8tb

wait for rebuild to complete (volume redundant)

expansion should happen automatically, but you may need to reboot if it doesn't

Thanks!

Also, I am worried about defragmenting. Syncing all the data from my old disk to the new should write the blocks contiguously, yeah? I hope so!

Re: Best practise for expansion

uh no, it syncs it directly in the same manner it was on the previous disk.

if you are concerned about fragmentation you should run defrag before and after, along with balance.

I'd recommend setting a volume schedule for about once a month for both defrag and balance (I set mine up on opposite weeks so they do not run at same time).

Re: Best practise for expansion

Thanks again. I've set up defrag and balance on a weekly basis, on staggered days.

What does balance do? And what does scrub do?
