CPU fan speed not showing
Hello all,
I've just replaced the CPU fan with a Noctua fan, which I modified slightly to make it fit perfectly (I'll share some pics later).
All is well but.. OS6 does not show the CPU fan speed anymore.
This is an old Pro6 running OS6
I used this fan https://noctua.at/en/nf-r8-redux-1800-pwm as it comes with a 4pin connector. I thought it was a straight replacement.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
Check connections. If all looks good, including pulse input and tach output not reversed, my next guess would be it's just a faulty fan. It happens.

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
I have already - I suspected the faulty fan as well... I guess I'll test it on my PC before returning it.
Thanks for the sanity check.
Update for @Sandshark : I am very confused. I tested the fan on my desktop motherboard (on CPU connector which is the only one I have featuring 4 pins) and it reports the speed as expected - as does the original ReadyNas fan.
Then I started the NAS with the original fan and the speed indicator was back. I then swapped the fan with the system running and the Noctua fan is now reporting the speed correctly... Not sure it'll survive a reboot.
What is happening here?

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
One thing I realize you didn't state is that the fan is also running at full speed, which would be a typical additional consequence. Are you sure it's turning at all? One problem with some aftermarket fans is they will not continue to run at the lowest speeds the NAS wants to run them, so that has to be adjusted.
Plugging it in with the unit already warm may have given it the boost it needed to stay above it's minumum speed capability. Rebooting re-started at a speed below your new fan's lower threshold.

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
Yes, fan is definitely spinning - and not at full speed from what I can see.
I rebooted the unit with the case open and the fan was not even connected to the heatsink: definitely spinning and not showing on the software.
This is an interesting one!!

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
any ideas? The CPU fan is not a big deal but I wouldn't mind swapping it! 🙂

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
Just to be clear, when you say the speed is "not showing", are you saying it's shown as 0rpm, or that it's missing entirely?

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
It's missing entirely unfortunately. No icon, no nothing. Only system fan.

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
OK, that sounds like it is mis-identifying which NAS type you have. Try to download the log ZIP file both when the fan is recognized at boot and when it is not, and cmopare what's in boot_info.log.

I obfuscated the serial number, yours should have the right one for your unit.
Did you make any OS updates about the same time you started working with the fan?

Re: CPU fan speed not showing
Thanks I'll give it a go.
No, last update was several weeks ago and I haven't touched since.
