Cannot access private home share

Cannot access private home share

I've looked all over the boards and online and cannot find anyone with the same problem as I've got.

I set up a new ReadyNAS 2100 and everything went fine. I'm using AD as the security mode and I've connected successfully and can see all the users and groups from my AD set up. I can create new shares in frontview with different user and group permissions and they all behave correctly so I know that the communication with the domain and the users login are working.

I've got it set to allow private home shares for all the users and, when I log in as admin, I can the directories that have been created for the various users. The problem is that when a user tries to access thier home directory they are prompted for a user name and password but, no matter what they enter, cannot access their home folder. My ultimate goal is to map everyone's My Documents to their private folder on the ReadyNAS so I'd like this to happen without them having to re-authenticate like it does for the shares that were created specifically through frontview. But at this point I'd be happy if they could connect at all.

Some of the details of my set up:
AD is on Windows 2000 (I know, I know...)
Allowed access protocols is CIFS only
No installed add ons
On the user preferences page "Private home shares for users" is enabled. All the other options are disabled except the recycle bin.

If there is anything else needed to help figure this out let me know. Otherwise I appreciate any help anyone can give me - I'm sure it is something simple I missed.

Thanks

Dave

Re: Cannot access private home share

I have a similar problem:
ReadyNAS duo
CIFS only (but no AD set up)

If I define a user to access a share I get a login-popup but it does not accept any login.
If I remove the user from the share access rights and enable guest login it works fine.

Create user
Try to navigate to \\nas\user

Re: Cannot access private home share

Experiencing exact same issue with ReadyNAS Pro 4 (4.2.19) joined to Windows 2003 domain. File permissions work nicely but user home shares are inaccessible no matter what we try for the credentials. Have even tried the user's email address and UID. Would love to have this working properly.

Re: Cannot access private home share

I was having the same exact problem. What fixed it for me was disabling "Private home shares for users" saving settings, and then enabling. Now I can access my own private home share without the annoying log in prompt, and so can my other users.

Worth a try..

Also, I'm using AD with my setup.

Re: Cannot access private home share

I am pulling my hair out about this problem. I've had an Ultra 6 for 48 hours (4.2.19), everything else working well but can't get users access to their private shares (via Windows 7 or XP - haven't even tried Linux laptop yet!). Have tried many things (but always making sure that user name isn't same as share name).

Part of my problem is that I am at the very edge of my technical ability so all suggestions need to use gentle language! I think "AD" (referred to ^^) is Active Directory but I have no idea what that is and whether I have it on my PC and laptop.

I did try this though - with no success.

Re: Cannot access private home share

For private home shares, the NAS user's name will be the same as that of the home share. What have you been trying and what has been the result?

ewok, thanks for getting back to me. I think this is a full list of the things I have attempted (on XP and I think Win7):

  • Created share "Name1" and tried to create user "Name1" - ReadyNAS prevents me with warning [User name already exists]

  • Created user "NameA" and tried to create share "NameA" - ReadyNAS prevents me with warning [Name can not be used by an existing account]

  • Create share "Public-access" with Public Access enabled and can access successfully in Explorer without requiring any logon entries

  • Created user "User-name" and share "Share-name" with CIFS and NFS as Read/Write as default access (both successfully) but without Guest Access. Browse to Share-name in Explorer. Asked by Windows to enter User name and password. Neither admin nor User-name logon details work (Windows error message that drive is not accessible and no permission to use network resource

  • Changed share "Share-name" default access in CIFS to Disabled, added "User-name" to write-enabled users field (and also to read-only field - just in case!). Asked by Windows to enter User name and password. Neither admin nor User-name logon details work (Windows error message that drive is not accessible and no permission to use network resource)

I am using the Apply button and Refresh button after each action. My problem is there are so many permutations for creating Shares and I have such a low level of knowledge I am really not sure what I am doing right or wrong.

Re: Cannot access private home share

Create a user and the home share will be created automatically and have the same name as the user - you do not need to try and create the share yourself

Sorry, been busy but I tried this and it wasn't successful. I created the user "user-name" and then tried to access the share "\\NAS-IP\user_name" and it asked me for a login name and password. Which I didn't have. So I am stuck again.

On the good news front I have got CrashPlan backing up from the NAS and I think I have got the PC and laptop to successfully run wake on lan commands to rouse the NAS.

How can you not have this if you created the account? The login is the name of the account you created (and therefore the name of the share also), and you specify the password during the account creation

Re: Cannot access private home share

@sphardy It may seem odd to you, but this was exactly my problem too. When I bought my Duo a couple of years ago, as admin I created accounts for my wife and myself using the same usernames and passwords as we use to log into Windows (both 7 and XP). No matter what I tried, I kept failing to log in with the very usernames and passwords we always used. Following the advice given previously about resetting preferences for creation of home shares we can now have our privacy!

When I had the trouble I set up alternative shares with slightly different names, giving access to them by the original usernames. We have the My Documents links in Windows pointing to these non-home shares and it works perfectly well, but it is an untidy solution. The one advantage of my workaround is that we can have read-only access to each other's My Documents folders - I believe this wouldn't be possible if we move to using our private shares. Can this be done?

Thanks
Dom

No it wasn't the same problem

Your problem based on your post was some issue of being unable to access the home share despite having what you believe to be the correct login credentials (I have no further information so cannot attempt to explain why) whereas the previous post expressed that the user did not have the login credentials for an account they created, which is very hard to understand

Re: Cannot access private home share

Seems like I'm having a similar problem:

I've been accessing my ReadyNAS DUO fine from different computers around my home for a week - yesterday it started to prompt for a username/password on one of the computers. Today it started prompting on another one. I have never specified any users - nor do I want to. Similar issue happened a couple of weeks ago - I bought a new disc, threw away the old one, did a full factory reset with fresh install of everything. It lasted a while before it started screwing up again.

My NAS is set up with one root folder called "Delt" (norwegian for "shared"). This folder contains several subfolders, containing my personal movies and pictures. Every computer connected to my network should be able to access/read/write/delete all of these files at all times. This is a media-server only. No backup or security required.

Any fix for this soon would be most appreciated!

EDIT:
And now my second computer can't access the NAS at all - I don't even get prompted for password. The error-window that pops up says: "You do not have permission to access.. blablabla ..contact your network administrator to.. blablabla..!" Are there alternate software I could use on my ReadyNAS DUO? I can't say I'm gaining faith here 🙂
