Cannot automate time machine backup to ReadyNAS 104

My friend has a ReadyNAS 104 that is running OS 6.10.3. He offered to provide me cloud storage space on his ReadyNAS. I was able to backup my MacBook Pro (OS Catalina) to his ReadyNAS using Time Machine when I was on his WiFI network at his house, but when the automated Time Machine backup runs on my WiFi network at home I get the error message "Backup Disk Not Available. Try backing up again when "MediaCentre.local" is available". Would anyone be able to advise why Time Machine is able to backup on my friend's WiFi network but not on mine? How do I fix this?

This is because Apple designed Time Machine to run on local networks, and not over the internet.  Time Machine isn't a cloud service.

It is possible to join your Mac to your friend's network using a VPN.  Note I haven't tried this with Time Machine specifically, since I don't own a Mac.

You could start with installing ReadyCloud on the Mac (and having your friend enable ReadyCloud on the NAS).  If that doesn't work, you could try ZeroTier on the NAS and Mac, or see if his router supports OpenVPN.
