Cannot copy large files with ReadyNAS Ultra 6!

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 6, running the latest version of the firmware (6.10.4 Hotfix 1).  It's populated with (6) 2TB drives and has served me well.

I'm not trying to copy a large media collection to another device (a media player with an internal disk) - over the network.  However, no matter what I do, the copy ends up crashing the system - usually due to out of memory errors.  I've found that copying a 4GB file using SMB just fills the ReadyNAS memory and then fills up paging space as well - then the OS starts killing processes to free RAM and it's all downhill from there.  I've tried using the REadyNAS GUI to create backup jobs and have even mounted the SMB share manully via the command line and tried copying it that way.  Same issue regardless.

I eventually did get the copy to work my mounting the SMB share on the ReadyNAS server manually via the command-line with the "cache=none" option to mount.cifs, but then the copy is WAY too slow.  🙂

Then I tried using NFS.  That seemed to work, but it too eventually crashed the system - but not due to out of memory errors (couldn't find cause).

Is there any reliable way to copy LARGE files over the network with SMB or NFS??   It just seems to use all RAM to cache the file as it reads it, until it starts killing processes and ultimately crashing the system....

Thank you.

Re: Cannot copy large files with ReadyNAS Ultra 6!

If your NAS still has the stock 1GB of RAM, you need to upgrade to at least 2GB.  Others have reported issues with OS6.10.x and only 1GB.  All native OS6 Intel based ReadyNAS have at least 2GB, so Netgear is not insuring the OS can run in less.  Unfortunately, downgrading to 6.9.6 is not an option unless you want to factory default.

The memory is PC2-6400, unbuffered, non-ECC -- basic PC memory from that generation that sells cheap on eBay.  And the Ultra6 can't handle sticks larger than 2GB.  The motherboard is not dual channel, so you don't need matched sticks of RAM.

Re: Cannot copy large files with ReadyNAS Ultra 6!

Ok, thank you!  I actually just ordered some RAM for it yesterday (was only $16 for 4GB of RAM!).  🙂  Will be here tomorrow.  I was *hoping* that was the issue, but wasn't 100% sure.

Thank you again for the quick reply.  I'll definitely post back after I install the new RAM to confirm that it solves the isuse.
