Hi brains trust,
I'm at a loss. I started having trouble with Plex were the server would automatically turn off after 5 minutes.
I've been trying to trouble shoot and get it back to running, but nothing is working.
Was running firmware 6.9.5, uinable to uninstall or install any apps. So I removed Plex via the browse function of RAIDar. Still no good, siumply cant reinstall.
Have reverted my firmware back to 6.9.4 Hotfix 1, still the same problem. I cannot install anything, upload new apps for install, or delete apps.
I really don't want to have to factory reset as I don't have the room to back up my data. I've got the logs ready to go, could I please get some assistance to try and resolve this?
Thanks

I thought I better close this thread out for anyone reading in the future.
I backed up as much as I could and factory reset the NAS and started again, all problems resolved and back to running how it should be.
Thanks to the tips and help provided here, but in the end, it was a factory reboot that resolved the issue.

That is a dangerous strategy, since RAID simply isn't enough to protect your data. Something to consider...

Was plex the only app you'd installed? If not, then what others?
Also, do you have the Antivirus service or the DLNA service enabled on the NAS?
Perhaps PM @JohnCM_S or @Marc_V and ask them if they are willing to analyze your logs.

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
I don't really want to factory reset, and RAID won't even save my data as I'm currently running RAID0 (the one where the drives are added together, not mirrored, I can't remember which denomination that is). But I'm really getting to the end of my rope with it.
Not running antivirus, however ReadyDLNA is enabled in Autoscan.
Have send my logs to Marc_V after he send a PM, hopefully a way forward can be found.
Thanks

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
I redacted the log link, they shouldn't be posted publicly here.
apt_history.log suggests the problem began here:
Start-Date: 2019-01-14 10:53:39 Commandline: apt-get -yq install --reinstall --allow-downgrades -o APT::Status-Fd=5 vpnserver Install: vpnserver:armel (1.5.0) Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) End-Date: 2019-01-14 10:53:39
dpkg.log shows half-installed and half-configured statuses after that.

But the rest of the logs don't go far enough back to see the details.

Does that provide any ideas on recommendations for resolving the issue?
Well, you really should make a backup, as continuing to work on this could make things worse.
You could perhaps try apt-get update --fix-missing and see if it helps.
You are logging in as root?

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
I’ve just been browsing the NAS either via the IP login admin screen, or by RAIDar, haven’t used the “root” login at all

So nothing was installed with ssh? Everything from the app screen in the web ui?
Maybe first try an OS reinstall if you haven't done that. It's a bit different from over-installing firmware.

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
Correct, nothing installed via SSH, all attempted from app screen.
I did however delete the Plex Media Server via the ‘browse’ function of RAIDar.
Haven’t tried an OS reinstall, just a firmware update and reverted back a version. Didn’t help.
I’ll need to read into OS reinstall, that sounds similar to a factory reset kind of option, but you voted against that earlier. Am I on the wrong thought process when referring to OS install?

I was intending to point out that having no backup was a dangerous strategy.
An OS reinstall does a partial reinstall of the operating system. It also resets the NAS to use DHCP, changes the admin password to password, and turns off volume quota. Those settings can of course be set back after the reinstall. It shouldn't affect data.
I'm not sure if it would repair whatever archives are messed up, but it is pretty safe to try.
Using ssh does have some support implications, so if you are wanting to use paid support it'd be best to look into that first instead of enabling ssh and trying stuff.

Just attempted an OS reinstall, and that hasn't helped, same old error coming back at me again. I'm going to do some reading around your other suggestion and see if perhaps that helps.

Note I was assuming that you'd already done some of the installs with ssh when I suggested it. You can do damage with the linux CLI that destroys your data volume or bricks the NAS web ui. So I do want to underscore the need to back up the data. Even if you are familiar with linux, there is risk.
That particular command does complete successfully on my own RN102. Don't do an apt-get upgrade as that can do damage.
The general procedure to gain access is to enable ssh in system->settings. You can access the CLI using
- putty.exe (windows) - available here: https://www.putty.org/. Log in as "root".
- terminal (mac): terminal root@nas-ip-address
- ssh (Windows 10): ssh root@nas-ip-address
Use the real NAS ip address of course. The password is the same as the NAS admin password.
It's important to use "root". Don't use admin.

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
Thanks for the SSH guide, so I've logged in and have only run the apt-get update and got the following:
# apt-get update --fix-missing
Hit:1 http://security.debian.org jessie/updates InRelease
Ign:2 http://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/debian jessie InRelease
Hit:3 http://apt.readynas.com/packages/readynasos 6.9.4 InRelease
Hit:4 http://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/debian jessie Release
Reading package lists... Done
Restarting the NAS and will attempt another install of the Plex app via the web gui....
AND.... no love. It's in a bad way, that's for sure

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
Tried some SSH commands to remove Plex and got the following:
# apt-get remove --purge plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: The package plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
I'm well out of my depth now so I'm just going to stop. I've already accepted the fact that dta may be lost from my NAS an I'll have to accept that, so I'm backing up what I can with the limited space I have on my laptop.
Does this seem at all recoverable?

I suspect it could be solved, but I am not sure how.
You could try per-incident paid support - not sure if they will take it on, since the problem was caused by third-party apps. But they might be willing. They have the capacity to rebuild the complete OS partition without destroying your data - and then you could start over with just the apps you need.
On the backup, I recommend investing in sufficient USB drives to back up your NAS. I'm seeing WD 8 TB USB drives on sale at Amazon for $140 US at the moment; 10 TB for $200. https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN/dp/B07D5V2ZXD/

Re: Cannot install ANY apps or delete ReadyNAS 102
Well after looking at the cost of per-incident support, I've ruled that out.
And I haven't had any other responses about my logs so I'll just have to look at backing up what data I can and then factory resetting the NAS.
Thank you for the assistance that was provided, but it appears this problem will not be resolved by the masses this time.

I thought I better close this thread out for anyone reading in the future.
I backed up as much as I could and factory reset the NAS and started again, all problems resolved and back to running how it should be.
Thanks to the tips and help provided here, but in the end, it was a factory reboot that resolved the issue.
