in
/var/log
got these log files:
upnp-av.log 784'804 KB
cron.log 45'973 KB
syslog 8'272 KB
messages 5'491 KB
are *.log safe to delete?
is it better to rename, restart system and THEN delete?
It seems to me that more than 800 mega in log files is quite too much
any hint?
TIA

upnp-av.log is the ReadyDLNA log.
Rather than deleting I would do e.g
# echo > upnp-av.log
You could empty the cron log too.
You may wish to make a backup of the log on the data volume first in case you wish to look at it e.g. if you are having problems with ReadyDLNA.
I would not empty the syslog or messages unless the size of those gets out of hand. Those are important logs.

You can only access these folders if you have ssh enabled on the NAS. That requires using an add-on (http://www.readynas.com/?p=4203). If the OS partition is already full it might be too later to install the add on. (You'd want the sparc version for the v1 btw).
On the mac, you then use terminal. There is a general guide here: https://mediatemple.net/community/products/dv/204405144/using-ssh-in-terminal.app-(mac-os-x)
If you are the original purchaser, you could also try Netgear support (they will charge of course).

thanks a lot for your quick replay
the problem I have is a double failure.
a) one disk is broken - I replaced and need to re-sync within my RAID system (4 disks)
b) the system freez before it is able to resync, meanwhile at booting
so I assumed the OS disk is to full and I need to remove some logs
to connect to the Netgear support might be not possible due to the short live times of the system (60 sec..... some minutes)
deleting the logs - I am not an unix expert and did not be abel to access to the OS drives ether directly nor in Debug Mode
DebugMode shows 58956 - what ever it means.
hope for furhter help..
regards

The code in debug mode is used by Netgear to connect to your equipment remotely.
The system likely would stay up longer in debug/tech support mode.
