Duo-V2 Boots, Logs-in, Fails w/ Frontview - Case #21142927

Hello all,

It's my first time on-premises so please be kind!

I'm here because my ReadyNAS Duo V2 has finally thrown a wobbly that I can't recover on my own. I've fixed countless other issues through reading the help you all provide here but I can't for the life of me find anything to help me with this.


The back-story:

The NAS was implemented as a backup device - it is the location in which local backups are stored for every computer in my home, it also plays host to any other files which require redundancy (License Keys, MSDN Images, Custom Image Backups etc. etc.).

The device hardware is as follows:

  • 2 x 3.0TB WD Green - Compatibility Listed

  • 1 x 0.5m Category 6 - S/STP cable

  • Power supported by 550VA UPS

The NAS holds a reserved IP address in the DHCP server with an unlimited DNS Entry.

The NAS is set up to run the X-RAID format over both drives to form the redundancy necessary.

For the past 6 months the NAS has been integrated into a test domain. Recently however it has become necessary to migrate the domain to a more permanent, extensible form - so each machine was migrated individually. It was during this that I noticed the odd behaviour.


The issue:

After logging into the web-interface I received the notification "Device is offline" - which seemed rather odd considering I'd just logged into it and RAIDar was showing it as completely online.

Another oddity was that the tabs at the top were all in CAPS with underscores rather than spaces, however as I work in S-Dev and I've seen this a hundred times before I simply put it down to an ill-thought out update.

I released the device from the AD at which point it required a restart, in theory at this point the original user accounts should be re-instated (which were clones of the AD User Accounts prior to the LAN AD integration).

I continued with the migration on other machines while the RAIDar monitored the boot.

After RAIDar suggested the NAS was ready to connect to I attempted to browse and received the standard Windows you do not have access error, though no authentication dialog which was rather odd.

After attempting to connect through the web browser I received the same "Device is offline" error as before, ignoring this I realised that not only now were the tabs at the top of page ALL_CAPS but the options on each page were showing as such, as were the menus. Some sections are completely missing, such as the SECURITY section. The DIV is still toggleable but there is no content.

At this point I decided to follow some tutorials which you lot had kindly posted up to diagnose the issue. Step 1, SSH in. Good thing I'd enabled that for just such an occasion!

After using KiTTY to connect I was happily presented with a login screen. The first password entry was incorrect (mistype) and it rejected this, however after entering the correct password the whole session terminated and the terminal window closed. This behaviour repeated.

I concluded that the most likely candidate was a corrupted OS Install, so I rebooted into OS Reinstall mode and waited. This had no effect on the issue.

Currently I have removed the drives, inserted them into fan-cooled eSATA HDD caddies and I am attempting critical data-recovery using R-Linux for Windows. The issue I have run into however is; when I set R-Linux to scan the disks, eventually it locks up. I'm not sure if this is a limitation in the program or an issue with sustained transfer over eSATA but it's preventing recovery of said data.

Crucially I haven't yet managed to find a straightforward guide to recovering data from these devices. All help here is absolutely appreciated!


Tl;dr:

  • Frontview prompts "Device is offline"

  • Frontview tabs/links ALL_CAPS_WITH_UNDERSCORES

  • Frontview some sections corrupted appearance/no data

  • SMB Access Fails

  • After accepting a correct password SSH session terminates

  • RAIDar says all is well

  • Attempted reading of 3TB disk over eSATA via R-Linux for Windows crashes


Recovery of some data is the priority, preferably all.


An idea?:

Would it cause severe issues if I were to place a blank, dissimilar drive in the machine and begin a Factory Reset?

i.e. Would this cause the device to lose the XRAID data for the primary set of disks, meaning when I plugged the drives back in the data would be useless?

1. "Device is offline" maybe caused by NAS failed communicate wtih AD server. after you changed to "user" moe, it would be OK;
2. SSH login issue, I think user installed addon "Enable_Remote_Access_1.0-arm.bin", this addon used dynamic password, it create by MAC address and firmware. Netgear Level 3 Support engineer uses a special program to get the password.
3. Disk locks up, According my experience, it seems the disk be locked, please contact Netgear support engineer and reboot this unit to telnet mode.

4. After you create a support case, please add the case# to sublect, so I can see and help you.
