My question is about how the Duo copies files in an X-RAID configuration.
I have a Duo v1 running RAIDiator 4.1.13 [1.00a043] 256MB [2.5-3-3-7] RAM, X-RAID redundant
Originally I had 2 Seagate ST32000542AS 2TB drives (from here on known as 542AS1 and 542AS2)
I replaced them with 2 Seagate ST20000DM001 2TB drive (here on known as DM0011 and DM0012)
A while back 542AS2 had a couple of SMART errors. It now has 1000 SMART errors.
So I bought the DM0011 and DM0012.
I followed the instruction I found here on how to migrate to new drives.
I installed the DM001s.
Last year DM001s became full. Nothing would delete, if it was in the trash the trash never seemed to let go of it.
Then DM0011 would no longer boot. Flashing green drive 1. DM0012 was fine but full.
This week I replaced the DM001s with the 542ASs. The SMART errors are still there. Now 542AS1 has SMART errors.
Since I have had the Duo with the 542ASs back online I have been delelting files from them that I know exist on the DM001s. My media library got duplicated on DM001s by iTunes trying to keep all the files together. This is how, I believe, the DM001s became full.
The DM001s have the most recent files on them, but I can't get to those because the drives are full and DM0011 won't boot the Duo.
Can I swap 542AS2 with DM0012 and have the newest files kept, the files that I deleted from the 5422AS1 deleted from the DM0012 and have newly free 500GB of space on the DM001s?

When disk blocks are written, they are written to both drives. Nothing is copied in ordinary operation.
When a new disk is inserted, everything on the remaining disk is copied to to the new one. This is below the file system level, so the disk blocks are copied even if they are not used.

No.
I suggest copying the files on the 542AS to a USB disk immediately - before they fail.
