Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

Have you installed sensors.d file conf as described in this post http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155&start=60#p411650 ?
Are you able to see on frontview the speed of your ultra6 fan ?
Did you change the fan or is it regular fan ? fancontrol values are different for each fan.

You can see 400 or 500 rpm as fan speed in this nas log. it's not enough .... With regular fan, speed would be 850 rpm minimum to keep cold the ultra6 enclosure.

Tune your fancontrol file to have 850 rpm minimum

Hi glem,

thanks again for the help!
* yes I installed sensors.d file conf as suggested
* yes I'm able to see on frontview the speed of my ultra6 fan
* it is a regular fan

how I can tune fancontrol file to have 850 rpm minimum ? here my fancontrol file:

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

upgrade pwm3 values : for example try 70, and after 75, 80 ....

change these lines in /etc/fancontrol file
MINSTART=hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MINSTOP=hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MINPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm3=70

and then execute this command to override fancontrol daemon
/etc/init.d/fancontrol restart

look on frontview the speed fan ... and try again

You can also run pwmconfig (as described in the second post of this topic) to look at concordance between pwm3 values and fan speed

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

I installed OS6 on my old version ReadyNAS Pro 6350 (MB version is Flame 6 Ver 1.1) and all works fine except that in Frontview both the fans constantly show as running at 5355RPM and Temps are as follows Aux 40degC CPU 43degC and System 40DegC

Fans seem to be working normally but the speeds are not being reported properly. Not sure about the temps at the moment.

Any tips?

Cheers

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

Did you install 6.0.x or 6.1.x ? if you have 6.0.x, update first to 6.1.x and check reports.

If all fans and temps seem to be working fine, you have just to add a sensors.d config file to compute the real values in fan and temp input expected by frontview.

Use this example working on ultra6 model to define your own config file. http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155&start=60#p411650
- chip statement is the name of your chip
- compute statement : example: compute fan1 0+fan3_input,0-fan3_input
The first argument (fan1) is the feature name. The second specifies how the raw value must be translated to the real-world value (0+fan3_input); The third specifies how the real-world value should be translated back to the raw value (0-fan3_input)

Find in the folder /sys/devices/platform/it8.... or w... or i8... (depend of your chipset) the files temp(x)_input and fan(x)_input which report your box values and use compute statements to put these values in the files expected by OS6 (files are not modified, changes affect only memory).

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

Glem,
I have the old version rndp6350 - will you guide me on what file I need to add in sensors.d? I suppose the ultra version is different to mine as adding the file did nothing. I even renamed it to rndp6000.conf.
Also do I need to refer to this file from anywhere else?
I have latest 6.1.4.
Sorry to be such a noob, but where do I find the name of my chip? The folder with teh fan and temps is w83627ehf.2576 on mine.

I also noticed that the temperature graph is blank.
Cheers

Still something not quite right though. I just checked the ambient room temperature which is approximately 82 degrees F. How can the CPU temperature be 79 degrees F? As I watch the graph over time both temperatures are dropping slightly every minute. The System temperature seems reasonable. It is currently 97 degrees F. I'll keep an eye on things for a while and report back later. . .

I've been trying to get the graphs I've generated embedded in the performance tab but can't see which file it's rendered from. How did you manage to do it?

compute fan1 0+fan3_input,0-fan3_input
compute temp2 0+temp1_input,0-temp1_input

Stil the same story.. I even added the file rndu6000.conf to the folder with the text above without any luck.

My fan control file is from the PRO6, al the other settings fail and cause my CPU fan to max out on RPM.

Hmmm. . . I must be missing something here. I thought that both the RN102 and RN104 models shipped with OS6 out of the box. Shouldn't ALL the graphs and other graphical elements be working correctly without the need to perform any of the hacks that those of us who are running OS6 on legacy hardware? I'm confused. . . :-?

The RN102/RN104 are OS6 only.

You can see the picture in the "performance" tab. However, the graphs are not available on the RN1xx. Per the manual:
Note: Status graphics are not supported for ReadyNAS 102 and 104 systems.
I'm not sure why this limitation is there, but I wish it weren't.

So are all the graphs available on the higher models, or is it a hack to get them showing in all models?

I know of no hack, and I think all the people who have shown the graphs are running the x86 OS6 binary (RN3xx/RN611/ultra/pro).

Unbelievable. . . Why would someone sell a product that was less than 100% functional right out of the box (and at least 8 firmware updates later)? Especially considering that a legacy device such as the Ultra 4 is about 90% functional without requiring any hard core hacking. I just don't get it. . .

Interesting hypothesis. Just curious, by that do you mean while someone is actually viewing the Performance page in the Web GUI, or generating the historical data in the background?

Unfortunately I don't know much about the Marvell Armada 370, but in theory, how does it compare (performance wise) to an Intel Atom D410 CPU like the one found in the Ultra 4? I am consistently amazed at how much work that single core low power CPU can perform. Mine pulls and processes six H.264 video streams (from surveillance cameras) 24/7/365, and the CPU utilization rarely peaks over 50% utilization. Considering how much (perhaps I should have said "how little") it cost me, I must say I couldn't be happier with it. 😄

Intel CPUs even the one in the Ultra 4 are much faster than the Marvell Armada 370-and the Ultra 4 has double the RAM of the 102/104.

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

Hi guys,

I have now taken the plunge and installed OS6 on my Pro, however, I really need some guidance in terms of stabilising my fan control speeds as well as getting the temp graphs to work.

Thus far I have ready the forum posts and have done the following:

Step 1
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
apt-get install lm-sensors fancontrol
echo "#fancontrol" > /etc/fancontrol

Step 2
Used the powerconfig command as suggested http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155#p395324

Step 3
/etc/init.d/fancontrol stop
/etc/init.d/fancontrol start
/etc/init.d/fancontrol restart

3. Readynas Drop, Readynas Cloud, Readynas Replicate, Readynas Remote all work!
4. Temperature graphs work (after applying fix as suggested in this forum)
5. Status animations (ie. Fans, Aux, etc.) do not work.
6. Addons work flawlessly
7. Hard drive temperatures are 8-10 degrees (i.e OS6:32c 4.2.25: 40c)

All in all, OS6 is a huge improvement from 4.2.25. Frontview boots up faster, services work wonderfully.

I am presently running a Pro with 4gigs of Ram and a Q6600 cpu.

Thanks.

Re: Easy fix fan/temp OS6 issues on x86 legacy #no support

Since 6.0.6 I don't have anymore the fan spinning like crazy so I didn't bothered to apply any fix, neither paid much attention to the temp that I suspected to be higher than reality.
My Ultra2 is now under 6.1.6, and today I finally did a Factory default to benefit from the NTRFS bug fix. After this factory default, I noticed that the temperatures where, now, correctly displayed (my NAS is on a balcony close to fridge temperature).
Well I was happy to see the system temp at 16°C, hdd temps at 21-22°C and CPU at 31°C. Then I restored the config file to gain the users accounts etc.. Here my problems is that the temp displayed came back to the faulty readings : all temps are increased by 5 to 10°C higher !
My question is : If I do an OS reinstall would it solve this temps reading problem ? I don't mind reconfiguring the NAS if I have to, but what I want to avoid is that after putting all my data back (2-3days..) then realizing that I need to do again a factory default !! (and then rebuild volume and put back everything again...).
your knowledge would be really helpful to save me a lot to time and hassle !!
thanks
note: i checked that I don't have any process burning the cpu/syst temp.
